Profile of the fourth THPP
The fourth TAI HAI Press Photo Contest (THPP) will be officially launched on May 5, 2014 in Taiwan.
Purpose: to strengthen the mutual understanding of compatriots and press photographers across the Taiwan Straits through the photography, exhibition and exchange of documentary photography and press photography works of the photographers across the Taiwan Straits.
The theme of the THPP is “Focus on Channel, Witness the Intersection”. The contest, by following world practices, will choose through appraisal the annual press photography works prepared by journalists, photographers and photography amateurs across the Taiwan Straits.
Award outstanding works: to reflect the peaceful development across the Taiwan Straits, to display the colorful folk customs and culture and people's current lives across the Taiwan Straits, and to express the destiny and emotions of people.
Advocate the intersection of concepts: the broadest press views, the quickest objective reflection, the most powerful visual impact, and otherphotographic expressions.
Create a brand-new platform: The THPP is a large and professional photography contest across the Taiwan Straits, and it creates a platform for the journalists, photographers and photography amateurs to exhibit press photography works, conduct academic information exchanges and have friendly communications. The contest is open to all of the entrants regardless of region and age. A professional and authoritative panel of judges will judge on the entries and publish an album of the winning works.
Photojournalists, photographers and photography amateurs across the Taiwan Straits are sincerely invited to enter the THPP actively, where they will have exchanges with the visual language, jointly witness the terrific moments of the years of 2013 and 2014 across the Taiwan Straits, and make contributions to the development of press photography in TAI HAI area with their own remarkable achievements.

Panel of Judges
The panel of judges consists of 10 prestigious journalism scholars, photography critics, photo editors and photojournalists across the Taiwan Straits.
Theme and Categories
1. Theme: “Focus on Channel, Witness the Intersection”
Entries shall center on people’s efforts for the peaceful development and mutual prosperity across the Taiwan Straits, demonstrate the economic, scientific and technological and cultural achievements, conflicts and process of conflict resolution, display the folk customs and changes in the people' lives across the Taiwan Straits, and express the emotion, will and destiny of the people across the Taiwan Straits.
2. Categories and Codes:
(1) Important News (IN);
(2) Economic News (EN);
(3) Portraits News (PN);
(4) Arts, Culture and Entertainment News (ACEN);
(5) Environmental Protection and Scientific News (EPSN);
(6) Life and Folk Customs News (LFCN);
(7)Cross-strait Issue News (CSIN);
(8)Ocean News (ON).
The above is applicable to both single photos and photo series.
3. Judging Criteria:
●Factual contents, with emphasis on the theme of “Focus on Channel, Witness the Intersection”;
●Vivid and lively, full of impact and infection;
●Creative technique of expression of images;
●Accurate and brief caption and illustration;
●Explicit entry categories.
Time Limit of Works and Deadline
Time Limit of Works: from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2014
Deadline: The closing time for all entries is 24:00 on February 18, 2015, and no entries will be accepted which are submitted after the time. The time of uploading works will be considered the time of submission of entries and in case of CDs sent by post, the postmark date will prevail.
Award and Prize
1. Award:
Each of the eight categories will have 1 gold prize and 9 honorary mentions respectively.
One winner of the “Photo of the Year of the THPP—Golden Waves Award” will be chose from all of the entries.
2. Prize:
The winner of the “Photo of the Year of the THPP—Golden Waves Award” will be given RMB 20,000 and the trophy, award certificate and album, and will be invited to attend the award ceremony.
The eight winners of the gold prize will be respectively given RMB 10,000 and the trophy, award certificate and album, and will be invited to attend the award ceremony.
9 winners (72 in total) of the “Honorary Mention of the THPP” for each category will be given RMB 1,000 and the award certificate and album respectively.
All of the winners will become members of the “TAI HAI Photography Fellowship Association”. Every two of the members of “TAI HAI Photography Fellowship Association” are entitled to recommending new members from those photographers or photography amateurs who have participated in the THPP for two or more consecutive times, and such recommendations will be reviewed and approved by the Organizing Committee of the THPP.
No winner is allowed to receive more than one award.
Announcement of Winners
The panel of judges of the fourth THPP will make its final decision (judging results) during the last ten days of May 2015 in Xiamen, and it will hold a press conference to announce the contest results. In the meantime, the list of winning works will be displayed for one week in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and English on the official website of the THPP.
Entering Rules
I. Entrants
1.
The contest is open to the journalists and photographers from news agencies, newspaper and journal publishers, photo publishers, network media and various photography organizations from Chinese Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, and photography amateurs in the society.
2.
The main channel to submit entries to the THPP is the official website of the THPP. All the entrants are required to fill out the entering application form, which may be downloaded from the official website of the THPP at www.thpp.org in both Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. Please state clearly your personal information and detailed explanations on the entries in the entering application form, and upload it to the website of the THPP through the network. At time of filling out the entering application form, in case that an entrant is not employed, he / she shall submit the letter of certification or an official document that can prove his / her occupational conditions, including the documents recognized by various photography organizations and their registration numbers.
3.
Entries shall be uploaded together with the entering application form.
4.
Winning works may be published in the media when the contest results are announced and will be included in the collection of the THPP.
5.
The Organizing Committee of the THPP has the right to use the entries free of charge and is entitled to using the photos for publication, exhibitions and relevant activities related to the THPP with credit to the entrants and copyright owners.
6.
After the announcement of the judging results, the Organizing Committee has the right to claim for negatives or slide duplicates or electronic documents with large amounts of data which meet THPP yearbook publication and exhibition quality requirements as the case may be.
7.
Entrants shall ensure that they enjoy the copyright of the entries or has been consented by the copyright owners of the photos to submit the entries, and they shall be solely responsible for matters related to the portrait right involved in the entries. Entrants shall be fully responsible for the relevant responsibilities for legal affairs arising from the photos resulted from any claim or complaint that many be filed by a third party for the person(s), building(s) or other subjects illustrated in the photos.
8.
Any entrant who fails to comply with the entry rules or the terms and conditions provided in the entering application form will be considered as disqualified.
9.
No entry fee will be charged for the contest.
10.
The entry rules and the provisions stated in the application form are binding.
II. Requirements for Entries
1.
Each entrant is allowed to submit 10 entries at the maximum, of which each photo series will be considered as one entry.
2.
Each single photo shall be photographed and published in the years of 2013 and 2014.
3.
Each photo series shall be completed or first published in the years of 2013 and 2014.
4.
Each series of photos may include 2 photos at the minimum and 10 photos at the maximum. For photo series, each photo shall be marked with the category code and series code.
5.
The primary way to participate in the THPP is to upload photos online. Digital photos shall be in JPG format with the file size between 500K and 2.5MB, and an effective pixel count of no less than 4.0 million.
6.
Entries shall be accompanies by captions and wording with complete Five W's. The explanations provided by the entrants in Chinese or English shall be accurate and brief.
7.
Digital photography: photos taken by using digital equipment shall be specified with “SDC”.
8.
Composite photos, multi-exposure photos and photos amended manually by taking advantages of computer technologies.
9.
The same photo shall not be submitted for different categories.
10.
The obverse side and positive frame of an entry shall not have the name or identity information of the entrant, or caption or illustration of photo, but shall specify the category number and the photo serial number and category code used in the application form.
11.
All of the photos shall specify the photographing region, place and time.
12.
The decision of the panel of judges will be final and no appeal will be accepted.
13.
Once winning works are discovered and confirmed that they have failed to comply with the entry requirements, the Organizing Committee of the THPP will immediately cancel their winning qualifications and publicize them in the media, and relevant works will be removed from the official website and exhibitions of the THPP.
Supporting Events of the THPP
1. One hundred hours focusing Fujian ten beautiful islands— August 2014
30 top-notch photographers across the Taiwan Straits will gather in Fujian, and factually record the moments of unique charm of Fujian ten beautiful islands.
2. Exhibition of Winning Works of the Fourth THPP—October 2015
There will be 80 photos (photo series) in total that won the Golden Waves Award and other awards in the fourth THPP.
