My Money---A Wise Investment of 5 Yuan

 

Teaching aims:

1.    Emotional Aim: The students learn the wise way of investing 5 yuan .

2.    Knowledge Aim:

Vocabulary:

Amusement; cookie; appeal to; approximately; soil; contain ;balance ;remove ;erosion; importance; crop; economy; puzzle; puzzled ;valley ;behave ;advanced ;software

Expressions and chunks:

3.    Skill capacity aim:

(1).Practice and learn reading for gist of narration.(start/middle/end)

(2).Practice and learn reading for specific information.(Scanning/skimming)

(3).Practice reading and thinking in the meantime.(Analyze the article structure.)

(4).Recognize and learn the use of infinitives.

 

Teaching Procedures:

Step 1 Lead in/Warmer(2-5minutes)

  1. Greetings: introduction of me myself.---Ms Wang,36years old with a daughter of 8years old. (1m)
  2. Questions for leading in(1m)

Do you miss the children’s day in the past? I bought books or took my daughter to parks or zoos. Every week ,she gets 2yuan as pocket money.

How do you spent the day, going to the zoo? Buying things you want? Playing with friends? How much will parents spend on you in a holiday? How much do your parents give you buy things you want?-----Pocket money.

  1. Brainstorming: Ask the students to stimulate as many words as possible on the topic.(2m)

What’s that you get from your parents every month for you to buy things you want?

Where can you go for riding Roller Coaster 过山车;merry-go-round回转木马; haunted house 鬼屋;bungee jumping蹦极?

Some hard food to eat made of flour and sugar? Feel interested to something? About? Food like rice, wheat and corn, etc?

(Competitions for words contribution in teams of 6-8)(Rule: one question a point , the winner can fine the loser team to do anything the winner asks to do. Team leader is the one sit in front.)

 

Step 2 Task in the class (1m)

1.    Read the text and discuss how to invest 5 Yuan wisely .

2.    Learn the function and usage of infinitives.

3.    Competition.(losers will be amused together by the winners)

 

Step 3 Pre-reading(1-2m)

What can you do with 5 yuan?

A competition for 2 answers a point.

  

Step 4 Reading(3m)

1.    Strategies: Read for gist/main idea---How can we get the gist/main idea in reading?

1)、标题提示法:(clue from title and subtitles or headings)

2)、段意串联法。(integrated by key words and hint from paragraphs )

3)、首尾归纳法:(conclusion at the beginning and at the end)

 

2. Reading—Competition(Everyone reads aloud a sentence (Read aloud one by one from each team. The one who reads fluently without stammering will get a point.)(5m)

Demand: Reading should go with independence thinking. Thinking involved is a must in reading for comprehension.

Gist questions(5m)

1)     Translate the title into Chinese.(积少成多,少也可以大有作为…)

2)     What other titles can be used? More value on money…

3)     If we are an examiner, how can we raise other three choices for the selective title? (A. Planting trees is beneficial B. Importance in controlling Yellow River Erosion)

4)     Find key words and get the main idea of each paragraph.

Para1 .  The removal of sand is the main cause of Yellow River erosion

Para2.   It is a massive job to control Yellow River erosion.

Para3   We play an important role in stopping Yellow River erosion.

Para4   A success of a tree-planting  programme in Inner Mongolia.

Para5   You can use 5 yuan to buy a tree and create a green future.

 

Questions for specific information(3m)

1). Which river is being talked about in the text?

2). What’s the problem with the Yellow River?

3). In which area has soil erosion almost destroyed farming land?

4). Is it a massive job to control Yellow River erosion?

5). Who has the most important role to play in stopping Yellow River erosion? The government, international organizations or every one of us?

6). Which example is given to show that 5 yuan can help to rebuild a local economy?

Answers: 1. the Yellow River  2. soil erosion  3. Fugu County in Shanxi  Province  4.Yes  5. every one of us   6. Jiuchengong Valley

 

Questions for induction/guessing/inferring (2m)

Why do the author write it?(purpose)—Advocate/propose planting trees to help with environmental protection.

Where can we find the article?---travel book?science magazine/journal? news report? educational booklet/brochure?

What are the other good ways introduced to readers for better use of 5yuan?

 

Step 5 language points(general learning—more detailed learning will be done in homework and next period)

Chunk-learning---a quiz on understanding of the vocabulary and phrases and chunks(5m)

   Check the students’ comprehension on the words and phrases used.

1.    Questions on the meaning and translation.

Step 6 Function(Grammar of infinitives)5M

1.    Find out the infinitives in the text and tell the functions.

2.    Brief introduction on non-predicate verbs(--ing;to…;-ed)

3.    Note: The usage of omission of to.

         See/watch/observe/hear/feel

         Keep/find

                                                                                             

Step 7 Relaxing time/Amusing time

     The team who win discuss and amuse the team who lose.

(Suggestion: The winner can ask them any three questions they want to ask about the member of the loser.)

Step 8 Homework(fluency)

      What can we do with 5 yuan for development in our school?

 

 

Note:

1.    Make the classroom atmosphere is relaxing and serious with competitions.

2.    Make sure most of the students are involved and do activities voluntarily.

3.    Make sure the students grasp the language learning requirement. They are all involved in questioning and problem solving.
