Unit4  TV programmes

Grammar (I)

Teaching Goals

●    To use “between …and…”,“from…to… ”  to express a period of time

●    To use “before” , “after” and “until” to talk about when things happen

●    To use “while” and “ as” to talk about when things happen

Teaching Procedures

Step 1 Lea-in and presentation

Do you still remember when you can watch a film called “Murder in a Country House” on Golden TV?

We can watch it between 7 p.m. and 9.30 p.m.

We can watch it from 7 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.

We can use “between… and…” and “from… to…” to specify periods of time.

e.g. Between 2003 and 2005, Tiger Watch was taken in India.

From 6.30 p.m. to 7 p.m., I can watch Cartoon World.

(Pay attention: We should never use “to” with “between”, we cannot use “from” with “and”.

e.g. Between 2003 to 2005, Tiger Watch was taken in India.  (X)

From 6.30 p.m. and 7 p.m., I can watch Cartoon World.  (X)

Step 3 Practice

Millie likes watching Golden TV. It’s her favorite channel. Help Millie plan what to watch this Sunday night, and try to tick which TV programs she can watch, and which she can’t.

Step 4 Presentation

We know Millie can’t watch “Cartoon World” from 6.30 p.m. to 7 p.m., because she has dinner at that time. So we can say “Millie will not watch Cartoon World until she has finished her dinner.” Cartoon World is on TV before Today’s News is broadcast. The Weather Report is on TV after Today’s news.

Conclusion: We can also use “before”, “after” and “until” to talk about time. These words are used to talk about the order in which things happen. “Before” means “at an earlier time then”.

“After” means “at a later time then” and “until” means “up to the time that”. We can use them to introduce a time clause. They can be placed at the beginning or in the middle of sentences.

(Pay attention: We can use “till” instead of “until”, but “till” is usually used in the middle of sentences.)

Step 5 Practice

Step 6 Presentation

(Show the picture)

What was Millie doing? She was watching TV.

What was Eddie doing at that time? He was sleeping.

While Millie was watching TV, Eddie was sleeping.

Explanation:

“While” and “as” are also conjunctions of time. They both mean “during the time that”. We use them to talk about two or more actions that happen at the same time.

When there are two long action, we often use “while”.

“As/While” can be used to introduce a longer action that started before a shorter action.

“As” can also be used to join two short actions that happen at the same time.

Step 7 Practice

1. Put the following two sentences together with “while/ as”.

(1) Millie was reading. Simon came in.

_____________________________________.

(2) Suzy was sleeping. The telephone rang.

Write the sentences on the blackboard, ask the students to match the two parts of the following sentences.

As I opened my eyes,            I lost my wallet.

While I washed the vegetables,    a postman ran out of the door quickly.

As I walked past the post office,   Mum prepared the chicken.

While I was shopping,           I saw my mother standing at the end of my bed.
