Having waved-off the runners at 6.15am yesterday, it was very disappointing to get a call from the support vehicle an hour later saying they weren’t going to make it far. Indeed after a painfully slow 20km they were pulled in.
In the meantime, fortunately for the runners and the rest of the team, the meeting Nur and I had with Kazium Sahin, Mayor of Tosya, couldn’t have gone any better. We went into his (rather plush) offices with the aim of securing a camp site for the night. We left an hour later having gratefully accepted his generous offer of for the whole team to stay at the Dogramaci Hotel and to join his party at the rooftop restaurant in the evening.
We joined 30 of the Mayor’s friends, colleagues, associates and other local leaders for a thoroughly enjoyable (dry) evening of eating, speeches (my maiden speech in Turkish was extremely brief but seemed to go down OK!), music and dancing. Omer from Karadeniz ev yemekleri even made it over
Unfortunately Kevin couldn’t make it to the dinner, having just received treatment for his medial Tibial stress syndrome (shin splints) - a painful condition of the lower limb causes may include biomechanical abnormalities such as over pronation of the foot causing internal rotation of the tibia which pulls and strains the muscles of the lower leg. This may have been aggravated by running on the road for a prolonged period of time. The conditions are obviously very different to the Sahara.
As a result of these unforeseen circumstances, the runners have been advised to take a day’s rest and start again tomorrow (Saturday). We have negotiated another (very cheap) night in the Dogramaci Hotel and looking at the rain coming down outside, we’re feeling that the timing of our arrival in Tosya was excellent. We’re a little behind the planned schedule now, however we have a couple of days contingency planned for each country which will be needed in Turkey for sure.
Nur is trying to organize a game of football with the local school this afternoon which should be fun – Tosya v Rest of the World.
