杂谈

The first part of today's class is the reviewing of last week's class. Then we went to a new concept which called 'Gestalt'. It is about a concept that the sum of the whole is greater than its parts. We watched several examples, and it's magic works on everyone in the class.

From this point, we can 'stretching sound to help the mind see' (Jacqnes Tati). It's a very important guideline for sound design. Therefore, Lucy and I decided to use it in our project.

I think this 'Gestalt' effect is reversible. When we give the audience a scene that shows a person walking, we can use any sound for his footstep. Our mind will automatically recognize this sound as the footstep of the man.

In the second part of the class, Micheal talked about some other unconventional concept of sound design. The first one is Anempathetic sound. It is a conspicuous indifference to what is going on in a film's plot, possibly thereby enhancing a sense of the tragic. Other concept including 'Anthropocentric sound'and 'Pareidolia'. But the most interesting one is  the McGurk Effect. It shows that a combination of visual 'ba' and acoustically 'ga' is a feelking of 'da'. Even most students in the class has a acoustics background, this effect still worked.
