Velimir Khlebnikov (1885-1922)

Translated from Russian by Alex Cigale

         ***

The female clouds drifted weeping
Above the highest valleys’ valleys
The female clouds were slinging hay
Above the saddest valleys’ valleys
The female clouds were dripping hay
Above the saddest valleys’ valleys
The female clouds drifting wailed
Above the highest valleys’ valleys

March 1908

***

A monster inhabits mountain’s high
And has a terrifying bottom.
It’s grabbed a girl carrying a pot
And flashes her a comely smile.
And she is ready to drop just like
a fruit in his paws like hairy branches.
The monster is as a monster looks.
Self-satisfied it scratches its haunches.

1908-1909

***

The elephants so tangled their tusks
They seemed a single white stone
Under the painter’s arm.
The deer so mingled their antlers
They seemed to join in an ancient contract
With mutual interests and mutual distrusts.
The rivers so drained into the sea it seemed
the arms of one were strangling the other.

1910-1911

***

Today I will again venture
there, into life, trade, the bazaar,
And lead an army of songs
Alone against the market’s blare.

1914

***

Property is a great thing!
It is a meeting place
For me and the state.
The state reminds me
That it exists!

VELIMIR KHLEBNIKOV(1885-1922)

Oh Dostoyevskyan running clouds!
Oh midday’s fiery Pushkin-notes!
La nuit appears, just like Tyutchev,
Infinite, with other-worldly over-filled.

1908-1909

People!  Let’s drown enmity in sun’s light!
They walk in raincoats of silent stars – I wait –
Brave intentions’ children,
Brave reasons’ sons.

1921

So pleasant to see
a little out-of-breath mermaid
who’d crawled from the forest
diligently erasing
with the dough of white bread
the law of universal attraction!

Early 1922

There is that smell of honey-clover flowers
Among the forget-me-nots
In which I am
My distracted strict intelligence
The square root of negative one
Melts the division’s dots
Relating that which was
Toward what will be.
At stake.

Early 1922

The sun's rays in the dark eye
of an ox
and on the wing of a blue fly,
like a wedding's line dance,
that streaked past above him.

Spring 1922
