英语中表示“看”这一意思的词汇非常丰富，但它们在含义和用法上存在着一些细微差别。现分述如下：
1. to look：(vi.) 看；注意，留神
Look before you leap.
三思而后行。
He looked in that direction and saw an airplane.
他朝那个方向一看，看见一架飞机。
We looked but saw nothing.
我们看了看，但什么也没看见。
look常可与at、round等介词连用构成动词词组。如：
The hotel is not much to look at.
这旅馆外貌不很出众（其貌不扬）。
I looked round the crowded amphitheatre, hoping to find an
empty seat.
我环顾挤满了观众的楼座，指望能找到一个空位。
2. to watch：观看电视节目或球赛等；看守，留神观察
What are you watching tonight?
今晚你们看什么电视？
Millions of people will watch the race on television.
千百万人将通过电视观看这场比赛
Will you watch my clothes while I have a swim?
我游泳时给我看一下衣服行吗？
I watched her cross the street.
我看她横穿过这条街的。
We sat there watching the cricket.
我们坐在那里看蟋蟀。
3. to stare：(vi.) 注视、凝视，虎视耽耽（由于害怕或惊讶、赞叹而张眼视之）
The ticket-collector stared at me a cold stare.
收票员用冷冷的目光凝视着我。
She was staring into the distance.
她在眺望远方。
The young man stared the girl out of countenance.
那小青年盯得姑娘难为情起来。
4. to see：看见，看到；看出；察看，查看；观看，参观
We suddenly saw a vessel through a gap in the fog.
透过雾罅我们突然看到一艘船。
The prisoner was seen to take the money.
有人见到犯人拿了那笔钱。
He was trying not to let the jailers see his agitation.
他尽量不让狱卒看出他的激动情绪。
You can demand to see all the Insurance Company’s files.
你可以要求查阅这家保险公司的所有档案。
Go and see if the tractor needs oil.
去看看拖拉机是否需要加油。
I have always wanted to see America.
我一直想去美国观光。
5. to glance：(vi.) 一瞥，瞟一眼
He glanced at me sharply.
他严厉地瞥了我一眼。
The girl glanced shyly at him out of the corners of her
eyes.
那姑娘害羞地用眼角瞟了他一眼。
He glanced listlessly at the report and put it into the
drawer.
他漫不经心地瞧了一下那篇报告，就把它放进了抽屉。
6. to glare：(vi.) 怒目而视，瞪着两眼看
At the cinema, he glared at the young men who were
talking.
在电影院里，他对那些聊天的小青年怒目而视。
They stood glaring at each other.
他们站在那里两眼盯着对方。
Don’t glare at me like a fighting-bull at a red rag!
别象斗牛瞧红布那样直瞪着我！
7. to peep：(vi.) 窥视、偷看
8. to sight：初次看到或发现
After many months at sea, Columbus sighted land.
在海上许多月以后，哥伦布看到了陆地。
Crewmen aboard the tanker sighted a ship in distress off the
coast of Senegal.
油船上的船员们在赛内加尔的近海发现了一艘遇难船。
9. to gape：(vi.) 盯着看，呆看（特别是对过去从未见过的东西，怀着极大的惊奇和好奇心长久地注视）
He gaped in astonishment at the scene.
他对眼前的景象惊讶得目瞪口呆。
Don’t stand gaping here!
别站在这儿呆看了！
The children stood gaping at the elephant in the zoo.
动物园里，孩子们都站在那里町着大象看个不停。
10. to eye：审视，密切注意（带着怀疑或兴趣注意地看）
She eyed the man up and down and asked him what he
wanted.
他将那人从上到下地打量了一番，然后问他要些什么。
He eyed me with suspicion.
他以怀疑的目光盯着我看。
Tom eyed the stranger from head to foot.
汤姆从头到脚打量着那个陌生人。
The child eyed him jealously.
那孩子嫉视着他。
11. to view：察看；看待
Several possible buyers have come to view the house.
几个想买房子的人已经来看过房子了。
We should view the problem from the point of
development.
我们应该以发展的眼光看这个问题。
12. to notice：注意到，察觉到
——It’s good to notice that the price has gone down.
——Yes, so I’ve noticed.
——看到价格下降是件好事。
——是啊，我也注意到了。
She noticed the man looking at her a couple of times.
她觉察那个男子朝她看了好几次。
Did you notice whether I locked the door?
你看见我把门锁了没有？
13. to witness：目击，目睹
He witnessed a gang of hoodlums steal the wallet of a
tourist.
他看到一伙流氓扒窃一旅游者的钱包。
They witnessed the accident.
他亲眼目睹了那次意外事件。
