英语中表示“哭”的词语较为丰富，它们常用作不及物动词，其后一般可接状语。现简介于下：
1. cry：哭喊
The little boy cried out with pain when he burnt his
fingers.
当那个小男孩烫着手指时，他疼得哭了出来。
2. weep：哭泣，流泪
He wept at the sad news.
听到那悲伤的消息他哭了。
3. sob：呜咽，抽噎，啜泣
The little girl sitting and sobbing in the corner is John’s
sister.
那个坐在角落里啜泣着的小女孩是约翰的妹妹。
4. wail：恸哭，哀嚎
She was wailing for her lost son.
她为失去儿子而恸哭。
5. howl：嚎（号）哭
The wounded boy howled for a long time.
那个受伤的男孩嚎哭了好长时间。
6. sniffle：抽鼻子，抽泣
The child stopped crying, but kept on sniffling.

12. burst / break into tears：放声大哭
The man burst into tears when he heard the news that his wife
died from accident.
听到自己妻子死于交通事故的消息，那个男人放声大哭。
13. cry / sob one’s heart / eyes out：哭得死去活来，伤心至极
The little girl cried her eyes out when her cat was run over
by a car.
这个小女孩在她的猫被车压死时哭得死去活来。
14. cry / sob oneself to sleep：（常指小孩）哭得睡着了
She sobbed herself to sleep, her pillow being drenched with
tears.
她呜咽着入睡，枕头被泪水打湿了。
