说起英语中的“笑”,人们首先会想到laugh和smile。不错,这是两个最常用的表示“笑”的单词。此外,还有许多近义词,它们意义相近,但又有细微差别。现将一些常见的表示“笑”的单词举例如下:
1. laugh:大笑,发笑
Everybody would drop dead laughing no matter what he
said.
不管他说什么,大家都会笑得要死。
2. smile:微笑
He smiled to think what a fool he had been.
一想起自己曾经是多么傻,他就笑了。
3. grin:咧嘴而笑,露齿而笑
They grinned with pleasure when I gave them the sweets.
当我给他们糖果时,他们高兴地咧嘴笑了。
He was chuckling to himself at hearing the news.
听了那条新闻,他暗自发笑。
5. giggle:咯咯地笑,傻笑
My mistakes set all the girls giggling.

He cachinnated till his sides ached.

10. guffaw:哄笑,狂笑,捧腹大笑(一般指不高尚的)
The crowd guffawed before he could finish his speech.

Everybody in the room surprised at him as he guffawed on the
occasion.

He simply simpered on hearing my story.
12. smirk:傻笑,得意地笑
He smirked at everyone that passed.

When Tom won the game, he smirked.

13. snicker:窃笑,嗤笑,暗笑(通常有不敬的成分)
They are snickering at Mary’s miniskirt.

14. mock:嘲笑,嘲弄(用语言、手势等模仿某人的行为举止以讥笑他人)
The children mocked their classmate’s sore foot by pretending
to walk with a limp.

15. deride:讥笑,嘲笑(用轻蔑的语言讥讽某人的缺点)
The boys all derided him as he failed to climb over it.

He was often ridiculed by his schoolmates because he wore
thick spectacles.

17. sneer:轻蔑地笑,讥笑(指玩世不恭、目空一切和故意出语伤人)
The proposal was sneered down.
提议被一片讥笑声否决。
18. scoff:嘲笑,蔑视(对某人或某物不尊重或不相信而用轻蔑的语言嘲笑对方,感情色彩要比sneer弱得多)
He scoffed at his attempts to improve himself.
他努力上进,她却对此冷嘲热讽。

jeer:讥笑(意思与scoff相近,但语气较强,指非常粗鲁、直率地scoff,含有大声嘲笑、甚至唾骂之意)
They jeered (at) the first speaker.

20. gibe / jibe:讥笑,嘲弄(既指粗暴地戏弄,也指善意地取笑或揶揄)
They would familiarly gibe and jest with him.
他们常常放肆地嘲笑他。
21. taunt:笑骂(比gibe语气重,指以挑衅的方式侮辱或申斥,暗含指责之意)
She taunted her husband into losing his temper.
她丈夫忍受不了她的笑骂而发脾气。
