先看一例：
They have a holiday every Sunday.
《英汉大词典》（p.835）给上例提供的译文是：他们每星期日休息一天。
据此，不少英语初学者就认为 a holiday是指一天的假日，其实不然。 从实际使用来看，a
holiday可指一天，也可表示一天以上，有时甚至还可以指不到一天。现分别举例于下：
一、a holiday指“不到一天”
Did he have a holiday on Saturday
afternoons?
星期六下午他休假吗？
Of course the pupils were given a holiday that
afternoon.
那天下午学生当然得放假。
二、a holiday表示“一天”
1/ Sunday is a holiday in Christian countries; Friday is a
holiday in Muslin countries.
星期天是基督教国家中的假日；星期五是回教国家中的假日。
2/ Next Wednesday is a holiday.
下星期三是假日。
3/ On the whole, it was a wonderful holiday for the
Pilgrims.
总的来说，这真是清教徒的一个美好的节日。
三、a holiday表示“一天以上”
1/ I have a three months holiday from now on.
从现在起我有三个月的假。
2/ They are going to take ten days’ holiday at
Christmas.
他们要在圣诞节休假十天。
3/ She is taking a holiday for a few days
now.
她目前在休几天的假。
4/ They went for a month’s holiday at the seaside.
他们到海边度了一月的假。
另外，holiday常与介词on连用，构成短语on holiday。此处holiday
的天数可长可短，有时并不明确。如：
1/ I’ll be on holiday all next month.
下个月我全月休假。
2/ Our typist is away on holiday this week.
我们的打字员本周休假去了。
3/ They hire boats to people on
holiday.
他们把小船出租给休假的人们。
4/ Mr. Smith is on holiday at present.
史密斯先生目前在休假。
