风雨雷电等自然现象用于比喻可以收到绘声绘色、形象逼真的修辞效果，如汉语的“掌声雷动”、“心潮难平”等。英语也不乏其例。

英语将自然现象名词用于比喻的常见结构是：a (n) + (自然现象)名词 + of + 名词。此结构中的两个名词含同位意义，前者为喻体，后者为本体。不少“a (n) +（自然现象）名词+ of”已渐渐形成一种固定的搭配，用以表示“一阵……”、“一场……”等，是一种简洁的形象夸张。现扼要分析如下：

1/ A strange rain began to fall on Pompeii ——a rain of stones.

庞培下了一场怪雨 —— 石雨。

2/ A rain of pamphlets fell from the plane.

小册子从飞机上雨点般地落下。

又如：a rain of questions（连珠炮似的问题）、a rain of congratulations（纷至沓来的祝贺）。

雨后晴空出现的彩虹鲜艳美丽，故rainbow一词也常出现于此结构中，新意溢出。如：

3/ The general wearing a rainbow of medals is his uncle. 

身佩一排勋章的将军是他的叔叔。

4/ He was confronted with a rainbow of opinions. 

他面临着五花八门的意见。

此外，含义与rain接近的尚有shower、hail。

5/ The bucket fell over, sending a shower of paint on the men below the ladder.

油漆桶翻倒了，油漆阵雨般地洒落在楼梯下的人头上。

6/ He was amid a hail of bullets.

他处在枪林弹雨之中。

1/ A cloud of locusts flew past.

一大群蝗虫飞过。

2/ A cloud of witnesses gathered in the court.

证人云集法庭。

3/ We can see a cloud of disappointment over his face. 

我们发现他脸上愁云密布。

1/ The book provoked a storm of controversy.

这书引起了一场轩然大波般的争论。

2/ The man's speech brought a storm of anger.

他的讲话在人们心头激起一阵怒潮。

3/ There was a storm of applause.

响起了一阵暴风雨般的喝彩声。

又如：a storm of cries（一场嚎哭）、a storm of cheers（一阵狂欢）。

surge的含义是“浪涛”（a forward rolling movement of a wave），此词常用来描述人的心态，这与汉语的“涌上心头”之说相似。如：

1/ I felt a surge of pity for them.

我对他们动了恻隐之心。

2/ A surge of anger rushed over him.

愤怒之情涌上了他的心头。

汉语有“潮水般的人群”之喻，a surge of 也用于此。

3/ A surge of impatient shoppers poured into the store.

一群迫不及待的顾客潮水般地涌入商店。

a wave of与其含义接近，却多用于人的感情。如：a wave of anger（勃然大怒）、a wave of enthusiasm（热情奔放）。

与surge、wave 相映成趣的是ripple（涟漪）。a ripple of 用来形容一阵轻快起伏的声音，使人感到妙不可言。如：

4/ A long ripple of laughter passed through the audience.

听众中传开一阵长久的欢快笑声。

又如：a ripple of conversation（一阵欢快的交谈声）。

flood用作比喻时留给读者的印象不仅在其“量”，而且在其汹汹来势。

1/ There was a flood of complaints about the bad language after the show.

演出之后，人们对其糟糕的语言意见蜂起。

2/ The old man was in a flood of tears.

老人泪如泉涌。
