读这样一段文字，年轻人怦然心动，掩卷而思；读这样一段文字，老年人遥忆当年，心潮难平。文章的标题是The Perplexity of Youth（《年青人的困惑》，作者：美/ Patricia Reaney）。
    Why is this? The reason is that the strange and bitter miracle of life is nowhere else so evident as in our youth. And what is the essence of that strange and bitter miracle of life which we feel so poignantly（令人痛苦地，辛辣的）, so unutterably（非语言所能表达的）, with such a bitter pain and joy, when we are young ? It is this: that being rich, we are so poor; that being mighty, we can yet have nothing; that seeing, breathing , smelling , tasting all around us the impossible wealth and glory of this earth , feeling with an intolerable certitude（确信）that the whole structure of the enchanted（使迷惑的）life ---- the most fortunate , wealthy , good , and happy life that any man has ever known -- is ours -- is ours at once , immediately and forever , the moment that we choose to take a step, or stretch a hand, or say a word ---- we yet know that we can really keep, hold, take, and possess forever ---- nothing. All passes; nothing lasts: the moment that we put our hand upon it, it melts away like smoke, is gone forever, and the snake is eating at our heart again; we see then what we are and what our lives must come to.
当然，一段文字有如此效应首先归功于作者敏锐的观察，睿智的思考。咀嚼之余，颇为其精彩的表达所打动。思想是红花，表达是绿叶，彼此相扶，才出佳作。
你看，此段文字中，频频亮相的parallelism（平行结构）闪烁着整饬的表象美，同时又对令阐述之纵深化推波助澜，行文就精彩了。诸如：
the strange and bitter miracle of life → 双形容词；
so poignantly, so unutterably → 双副词；
a bitter pain and joy → 双名词；
being rich, we are so poor; that being mighty, we can yet have nothing → 双分词短语；
that seeing, breathing , smelling , tasting all around us the impossible wealth and glory of this earth → 四个分词连用，另加双名词；

尤其耐读的是，其中的that being rich, we are so poor; that being mighty, we can yet have nothing / seeing, breathing , smelling , tasting all around us / we choose to take a step, or stretch a hand, or say a word的表达，一气呵成，飞瀑直下，语势磅礴，读者的神思在作者的酣畅文笔中得以飞扬；作者的观点在斐然文采中得以充分淋漓铺展。
我们读到的译文是：
这是为什么？因为，没有任何时候能像青年时代如此强烈的感受到人生的神奇和悲伤。那么，我们年轻时，所感到的如此强烈、无从表达的人生那种神奇和悲伤的本质究竟是什么呢？是这样的：我们虽然富有，但又很贫穷；虽然我们很强大，然而我们却一无所有。由于我们无时无刻地目睹到、呼吸到、感受到、品味到这个世界根本不可能得到财富和荣誉，一种无法抗拒的自信便油然而生，美妙人生的整个精华----人类所认识到的最宝贵的、富有的、美好的、幸福的人生----都是我们的----立刻、毫不迟疑、永远地归我们所有。但是当我们迈前一步，伸出一只手，或说一句话----这时我们才知道：我们能真正永远拥有、掌握、保留和占据的是----乌有。一切都流逝了，无一幸存。我们刚要抓住它，它却像烟雾一样飘走了、永远地飘走了。我们的心再次被咬噬，于是我们看到了自己的真实的面目和我们的归宿。  
能充分认识和欣赏原文的整饬带来的表象美，就能帮助我们更深入地理解原文。-- 此非虚言。请看事实：
… the most fortunate , wealthy , good , and happy life that any man has ever known ---- is ours ---- is ours at once , immediately and forever 被译成“人类所认识到的最宝贵的、富有的、美好的、幸福的人生----都是我们的----立刻、毫不迟疑、永远地归我们所有”。
遗憾，译者将at once , immediately and forever“捏”在一起，译成“立刻、毫不迟疑、永远地”，典型的“眉毛胡子一把抓”！
at once , immediately and forever不能“捏”在一起，桥归桥，路归路。其中at once是“桥”，而immediately and forever则是“路”。
认识原文的整饬的表象美，译笔才能游刃有余。行文追求整饬美，本段伊始，就已展露，immediately and forever只不过是延续了这种整饬美。而且从语义上分析，immediately and forever两者相反相成，是一对合情合理的组合，含义是“立刻并至永远”。at once，岂能与immediately and forever硬作“捆绑”。
诚然，at once有“立刻”的含义，但American Heritage Dictionary提供了at once的另一个重要含义：all at one time; simultaneously，意思是：立刻；同时。另如：Everything happened at once. 所有的事都一起（同时）发生了。
上段中的at once，实际上属于happy life that any man has ever known ---- is ours ---- is ours（at once）中不可分割的一部分，应取all at one time; simultaneously之义。
认识到位，译文之“硬伤”，便可避免。
上段似可改译成：
    为什么会这样？理由是，怪异并痛苦的人生奇事，人生别的阶段都未能像青年时代感受得这么深刻。我们年轻时，感受特别痛苦，感受特别难以言传，苦乐参半，所谓奇怪并痛苦的人生奇事，其本质究竟是什么呢？
是这样的：虽然富有，却又一贫如洗；虽然强有力，却又一无所有；看到、吸到、闻到、尝到就在我们身边，却又存在于这个地球的似乎不能想象的财富和荣耀，一种无法抗拒的自信便油然而生，美妙人生的全部 ---- 人类迄今所知的最幸运、最富有的、最美好的、最幸福的生活 ---- 都是我们的 ----  都同时被我们所拥有，立刻，直到永远。可是，当我们一迈步，一伸手，一开口 ---- 我们便知道：我们能够真正永远拥有、掌握、保留和占据的却是 ---- 乌有。
一切皆逝，无一幸存。我们刚伸手去触摸，它却逝如烟雾，不复存在。蛇再次咬噬我们的心，那时，我们明白了自己是谁，明白了自己生活的必然归宿。
