列位看官，台湾诗人余光中先生，曾留学美国，后任台湾中山大学文学院院长，著译近40种。其名作《乡愁》写于1972年，强烈表现出对大陆日夜思念之情。该诗由汤钟琰教授翻译。

小时候                            When I was a child,

乡愁是一枚小小的邮票              Nostalgia seemed a small stamp：

我在这头                          “Here am I

母亲在那头                        And there … my mother.”

长大后                            Then I was a grown up.

乡愁是一张窄窄的船票              Nostalgia became a traveling ticket：

我在这头                          “Here am I

新娘在那头                        And there … my bride.”

后来啊                            During the later years

乡愁是一方矮矮的坟墓              Nostalgia turned to be a graveyard：

我在外头                          “Here am I

母亲在里头                        And yonder … my mother.”

而现在                            And now at present

乡愁是一湾浅浅的海峡              Nostalgia looms large to be a channel：

我在这头                          “Here am I

大陆在那头                        And yonder … my Continent!”

    此处将“大陆”译为“Continent”不妥。Continent是“地球上大块陆地和附近岛屿的总称”，是指七大洲这种概念上的大陆。Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English 对它的解释是：any of the 7 main unbroken masses of land on the earth；而该词典对mainland 的释意为：a land mass, considered without its islands，是与其邻近海岛比较而言。原诗中的“大陆”，实指中国本土，是对海峡对岸的台湾省（岛）而言，因此将其译为 Mainland 才准确贴切。

    余光中先生曾说：我这一生的关系，可用很多女性来形容说明：大陆是母亲，台湾是妻子，香港是情人，欧洲是外遇。
