作者是一位美国妇女，其丈夫应征去了越南战场，后来不幸阵亡，她终身守寡，直至年老病逝。女儿在整理遗物时发现了母亲当年写给父亲的这首诗——

你记不记得那一天，我把你借给我的新车撞坏了？

我以为你非杀了我不可，可是你没有

你记不记得那一天，我硬拉着你去海滩，果不其然下了雨？

我以为你一定会说，“我提醒过你的”

可是你没有

你记不记得那一天，我和所有男人调情好让你嫉妒？

你果然嫉妒了，我以为你一定会离开我的，可是你没有

你记不记得那一天，我在你的汽车毯上吐了一地草莓饼？

我以为你一定会厌恶我的，可是你没有

protected me-译为“保护我”肯定是没错的，但我按中国人的习惯，翻译成了“疼我”——跟原词意思未必“一模一样”，但整句诗读来顺畅些，其情感（情绪）应该更接近原作者的表达。

另，感谢博友“照晓”对原译诗（转帖）的中肯意见——“但是你没有”，不及“可是你没有”语感自然——我试着将“可是”精简为“可”，但语气的情感程度上，似有削弱，于是恢复为“可是你没有”。
