This Was My Mother
She was 82 and living in Keoluk when,
unaccountably, she insisted upon
attending a convention of old settlers of the Mississippi Valley.
All the way there, and it was some distance, she was
young again with excitement and eagerness. At the
hotel she asked immediately for Dr.Barrent, of St. Louis. He had
left for home that morning and would not be back, she was told. She
turned away, the fire all gone from her, and asked to
go home. Once there she sat silent and thinking for many days, then
told us that when she was 18 she had loved a young medical
student with all her heart. There was a misunderstanding
and he left the country; she had immediately married, to show him
that she didn’t care. She had never seen him since and then she
had read in a newspaper that he was going to attend the old
settler’s convention. “Only three hours before we reach that
hotel he had been there,” she mourned.
She had kept that pathetic burden in her heart 64 years without
any of us suspecting it. Before the year was out, her memory
began to fail. She would write letters to school-mates who
had been dead for 40 years and wonder why they never answered. Four
years later she died.
used
to say that something is very surprising and difficult to
explain:
1 to feel
very sad and to miss someone after they have died
[= grieve
for]:
2 to feel
very sad because something no longer exists or is no longer as good
as it used to be:
sb. in mourning, wear mourning. In this country
people in mourning wear
mourning.
1 great
sadness because someone has died:
2DCCMX black clothes worn to show that you are very sad
that someone has died:
1. It was some distance。
some
2. with excitement and eagerness
excitement and
eagerness.
excitement and eagerness。
excitement and
eagerness。 with
3. the fire all gone form
her
gone from sb. gone
gone from him ; smile gone from her face
4. love sb. with all one's heart
有一个朋友,曾经love her boyfriend with all
her
The deeper you fall in love with him, the more hurt you will get in
the end.
5. Before the year was out, her memory began
to fail.
the
the year was out
does my memory seem to fail these days? I forgot
my dad's
birthday. I thought I
was still young!
Simple
is power!
