据史书记载，中国大约从南北朝开始，地方政府结合宗教势力，在地下修造各种神话地狱原型。目前，这些地狱被完整保存下来的尚有4座：

柏山寺十八层地狱：位于山西省中部蒲县城东2公里处的柏山寺（东岳庙）内。全部地狱构造设于地下，由次第而下的15孔窑洞，组成完整的十八层地狱结构；其中有3孔窑洞各分为2层。这是中国仅存的一座十八层地狱原型。

双林寺地狱：位于山西省平遥县西南7公里处桥头村的双林寺内。所存地狱分地藏、十殿阎罗、六曹判官诸部分。这些地狱现今保存仍十分完整。

金阁寺地狱：位于山西省五台县五台山南台西北岭畔的金阁寺内。它又称地藏殿。其塑像艺术造诣较高。它和旁边的观音殿、菩萨殿、乐王殿等，合称为金阁寺六大殿。六大殿内有1000余尊塑像，是唐、明以来殿宇塑像的精品。http://p3.pstatp.com/large/48400029efdfe668893
