甬水桥地处宁波古城甬水门附近，因名，又称夏家桥、下架桥。它跨于南塘河，东接南郊路，西通周家堰，居为它山、蛟口二水入鄞之咽喉。
现存的甬水桥，《宝庆四明志》中记载，始建于元符三年（公元1100年），原名“夏家桥”，可能当时有夏姓人家居于此地。到了明代才正名为“甬水桥”。明代天顺二年（公元1458年），确定“甬水桥里”的“南塾墟”逢三逢八为市集，称“长春门外南廓市”，俗称“三市”，是当时城内最繁华的集市，一直延续至今。而在明代嘉靖三十九年（公元1560年）成书的《嘉靖宁波府志》中记载，“甬水桥，俗名下驾桥。”据传有皇帝过此桥而名，之后所有大大小小的官员到此都要下马。

南塘河的历史到这一段就算终结，因为延伸下去的南塘二期都是复制品。这是商业改造历史街区的败笔，很多遗存并没有得到太大的尊重！
