I've heard of the National Honor Society before but this is the first time that I'm so close to it, with all the concerning information and application forms in my hands. I really wish that I would be in such a group providing its members opportunities strengthening themselves, helping others, and improving the community.

   我以前听说过NHS，但这是我头一次离它如此之近，因为所有相关信息和申请表格就在手头。我真的希望自己能加入这样的组织，它能为成员提供强化自身、帮助他人、改善社区的机会。

    Firstly, the opportunities the NHS offers strengthen the members themselves.According to the NHS constitution, four purposes are said to guide NHS chapters. They are:

   首先说说NHS提供给成员强化自身的机会。NHS的宪章里提出了四个目标。他们是：

    1. to create enthusiasm for scholarship

    2. to stimulate a desire to render service

    3. to promote leadership

    4. to develop character in the students of secondary schools

  一是创造学业方面的热情；

  二是激发提供服务的愿望；

  三是提升个人的领导能力；

  四是开发学生的良好品性。

    For me, I believe that the most beneficial thing for me to join the NHS is that it will promote the leadership.

    就我而言，我觉得自己加入NHS最有益的事是提升领导能力。

    As an exchange student here, I've seen so many chances to take part in fun activities here that I've decided to pursue farther education here in the United States and being a member of the NHS would be able to proved the opportunities even though I'll be in a private school next year. On the other hand, since I've just been here for half a year, I haven't really been a real leader of a group although I've taken part in many activities and I believe that joining the NHS would provide me the chances to be a leader and trains me to get more of the characteristics a good leader should have, for example, being decisive.

    作为一名交换生，我在美国看到了如此之多的参加各类有趣活动的机会，于是决定留在美国接受进一步的教育。如果能成为NHS的成员，将会给我在来年转入私立学校提供更多的机会。另一方面，我来美已有半年时间，尽管参加了许多活动，但我还没成为真正的团队领袖，我相信，参加NHS将会给我成为领导者的机会，并赋予我更多作为好的领导者应具备的品质，比如，决断力。

    Secondly, the opportunities the NHS offers help others.

    其次，NHS提供帮助他人的机会。

    As we all know, the NHS provides its members opportunities to do something helpful for others and grow to be good leaders. This is a benefit not only to themselves, but also to other people, because as volunteers they are pursuing good for people and as leaders they are guiding the group in a correct direction. As many people say, I'm a hard worker who is also willing to make every effort to help others and these traits meet what the NHS requires. A hard-working and helpful person will never complain about the work he or she does for others, instead, he or she is doing it with pleasure of being able to help others. Moreover, I'm a very adaptable person, I got used to this completely different life in a very short time and have been keeping good grades ever since. If there are some different situations or something requiring us to be in other places, I would get used to it in a short time.

    我们都知道，NHS为其成员提供帮助他人和成长为优秀领导者的机会。这不仅有益于成员自身，而且有益于他人，因为作为志愿者，他们追求利他，作为领导者，他们为团队指引正确的方向。正如许多人所说的那样：我是一名勤奋的工作者，愿意不遗余力帮助他人。这一特质符合NHS的要求。一名工作努力和乐于助人的人，不会抱怨他为别人所做的事，相反，他以帮助他人为乐。另外，我是个适应力强的人，我在很短的时间内适应了完全不同的生活，并一直保持优异的学习成绩。如果情况有变，或因事需要我另赴它处，我仍会很快适应。

   Finally, the opportunities the NHS offers improve the community.

    最后，NHS能够提供改善社区的机会。

   I have to say that if it isn't because of so many people's help and kindness, I can't be here and it's impossible for me to realize a lot of my potentials that I didn't notice until I got here. As humans, nobody knows when we will need help but we know when we can help others. I'm grateful for all the help I get and that's why I'm seeking chances to benefit other people as long as I can. I'm in the church choir which often gives performances to homeless shelters and I believe the activities with the choir purifies my soul and shows me how beautiful the simple things we do for the people can be and how big a difference they can make. Joining the NHS would provide me even more chances to go deep into the community and reach out to change it into a prettier place with a sincere heart to help and love.

    我要说，如果不是因为这么多人的帮助和爱心，我不会来到这里，并且我不可能意识到自己还有这么多的潜能。没人知道我们何时需要帮助，但我们知道我们何时能够帮助他人。我对我得到的所有帮助心存感激，那也是我为什么要尽我所能寻找机会去帮助别人的原因。我现在参加了唱诗班，这让我能经常为无家可归者演出。我相信这些活动会净化我的灵魂，让我看到我们为他人做的简单事情可以如此美丽，并能创造多么巨大的变化。参加NHS，将会为我进一步深入社区活动，努力用一颗诚心和爱心使之变得更加美好，提供更多的机会。

   I know I may not be the person taking part in the most activities, nor am I the one who has the best leadership right now. I just have a determination to lead, readiness to help, and willingness to love which I believe are the most important for being a member of the NHS.

    我知道我不是参加活动最多的人，我目前也谈不到有最好的领导力，我有的只是决心，去实施领导，去帮助他人，去奉献爱心，而这些，对于一名NHS成员来说，是最为重要的。
