More and more wide用法与语法教学

 

邵老师的教学课件中有一个例句：The road becomes more and more wide.

陈老师问：是more wide还是wider?

 

对此，我特做如下个人解读。

1、原句语义

原句是The road becomes more and more wide.这里more and more是固定搭配，表示increasingly，所以原句的语义是：The road becomes increasingly wide. 作者的基本语义，或者理解视角是The road is wide. Now the width is more and more. 此一语义是积极语义。

 若使用The road becomes wider and wider. 基本语义是The road is wider. Now the state of being wider is increasing. 此一语义可能是积极意义，也可能是消极意义，因为此句也可以理解为：说话者担心最后的结果是too wide.

若使用汉语表达，则较为准确的理解是：

语句A. The road becomes more and more wide. 道路越来越宽了。

语句B. The road becomes wider and wider.道路更宽、更宽了。

鉴于后一句汉语不普遍，所以我们也将语句B也翻译为：道路越来越宽了。

其实，只要我们不使用数量概念事实判断依据等进行表达，wide就是一个价值判断问题。比如我们说：

The bed is 1 m wide. 这是事实判断。

我可能说：Oh, it is not wide. 但一个孩子可能说：Oh, it is wide.

再说道路：

2车道的马路，对于百日场村里的乡亲们，他们会说：The road becomes more and more wide. 他们也可以说The road becomes wider and wider.

4车道的马路，对于广深高速路上的驾驶者来说，他们从广州市区转上高速，他们可以说The road becomes more and more wide. 他们不会说：The road becomes wider and wider.

所以，二者语义具有一定的区别，当然，主要是从说话人的心理认知出发的区别。

当然，这一问题还可以从社会语言学、语言心理学、认知语言学等视角进行解读。此处不赘述。

3、more wide + 名词的运用案例

 

其实，我们在英语中可以看到很多more wide的案例：

We need more wide tables.

They built more wide roads.

There are more wide bridges in Wuhan now.

This course can take you more wide horizons on linguistics.

我们甚至可以说：

We need more and more wider tables.

我们当然也可以说：

Can we have more big bowls?

I need more long rulers.

 

如此案例，不胜枚举。

 

基于以上信息，我们认为：

more and more wide是可以使用的，当然wider and wider也是可以使用的，二者语义有一定区别。

 

 

 

4、语法教学的一点态度：不讲“死”规则。

在语法唠叨中，我曾经专门提到一个语法教学的态度：

不讲“死”规则。

对于语法规则，我个人持描述主义态度，也就是：我们通过观察英语语言的运用实际案例，描述英语的运用形态，从描述中形成语法规则。

所以，英语语法的规则，包括汉语语法的规则，我们很难确定完全不可以怎么用。所以，我的建议是：不把规则讲死，也别把规则讲死。

我曾经经常提到一个极端案例：

很多老师都会给学生讲：I后面不可以用is, are，只能用am。

我说，这不对。

在学生学习英语开始阶段，我们应该这样讲：I am是一种结构，表达“我是”。

学生真正运用英语之后，他们会遇到以下非常真实、非常正确的语句：

I is a pronoun here.

I is wrong in this sentence. Me is right.

I is an English letter.

I is the first letter in the word is.

I is the second letter in the word him.

I are books of literature in Chinese libraries but in Canadian libraries, P are books of literature. （这是图书馆里的图书分类。）

I are three boxes in the corner next to H. (这是各种物品分类排放，I是某一类物品的标识)

 

所以，我的建议是：

1、任何语法，需要看语境，单从一个词判断，无法判断语法正确与错误。

2、不讲“死语法规则”，更不讲“死”语法规则。

3、不设计、不使用、不纠缠过于强调“死”规则的语法试题、模拟题、练习题。这些不会成为真正有价值的任何正式考试的试题，即使偶尔出现在统考试题中，学生不会而丢掉这一分，也不会致命。而且，完全可能因为我们在其他地方进行了更多训练而使学生在他处多得了一分、甚至几分。

4、对英语语法规则采用描述主义态度，基于语料进行语法判断和讲解。
