明天要为克拉玛依的英语老师做两场讲座,因为正好是Valentine's Day,于是在PPT中加上了一页Happy Valentine's Day.
为了怕老师们误解,我有特地找来几张外国的Valentine card(见文字之后),说明其丰富含义:Valentine's Day不仅仅是相爱的人的节日,而且也是一个表达爱意的节日,你应该向你所爱的人表达你的爱意。
Valentine's Day的起源有基本版本,其中一个很多人认可的说法是:这个节日是纪念专门为年轻人证婚的Valentine教士的,因为当时罗马皇帝对结婚设置很多限制条件。这位Valentine教士后来被封为圣人,成为Saint Valentine。再到后来,为了纪念,就有了Valentine's Day。
wiki上有复杂、全面的故事,而且还有关于“老师是这一节日收到贺卡最多的人”的说明。

所以,我可以肯定:这个节日不适合翻译为“情人节”。若直译,是否可译为“瓦伦丁节”,若意译,是否可翻译为“爱意节”?
其实,我国现在对于外国节日、尤其是西方节日的名称翻译存在着诸多问题,这也是外语战略问题的一个小小的领域,而意义却可能并不那么小。或许需要专题讨论一下。
