某法院请我帮忙将一些法律名言译为外文。接到中文稿我很吃惊，觉得不太好译。因为凡外国的格言不是翻译问题，而是必须查找原文。于是请学生帮忙查。查找几天总算找到一些。今天上午我与学生一起核对了查找到的原文，其中下列第二条死活查不到原文，斜体字是学生自己译的。

    中文格言网上也能找到译文，但我都不满意，例如范仲淹的名句“先天下之忧而忧，后天下之乐而乐”网上有十几种译法，我都不满意，只好自己胡乱译成：Concern the woe of the world first, enjoy the weal of the world last.

    中文格言常讲究对仗，英文常用排比。我在译中文格言的过程中力图找对仗的英文字句，挺不容易的。译完了觉得还有点意思。

    还有些中文名言逻辑上和语义上较难理解，我只好先按照自己的理解译了。不通之处，不好意思。

    为了几条格言，学生查找了几天，我们几个人又整整讨论了一个上午。最后还遗留一个问题没解决，就是沈家本的英文名字如何写。查来查去查不到老先生的英文名字，或许没有？只好先按汉语拼音写了。

    前一段时间有人让把一个苏联人的中文译名译成英文，真是难倒我了。

    翻译真得不容易。以下是这几条名言，放在这儿，求教于高贤：
