Aida

by Hong Zhu

1

There never is the most beautiful woman.

The most beautiful woman is on the moon.

The woman on the moon uses her shadow

To have a Platonic love affair with me

Aida, you are close to me, but also far away.

Please look at me, and smile!

Aida, I dare not say you are the most beautiful woman,

But I can’t think of anyone who is more beautiful than you.

In this time that no one's the king, you still

Born on schedule, becoming a lonesome queen.

Everyone (including me) can only remotely

Love you, afraid if one step closer,

Would lose, lose the rare meeting in a thousand years

With the most beautiful woman, the most beautiful shadow.

2

This face, too vulgar using flower for comparison

Even summation of rose, narcissus, clove and so on,

Also can’t match Aida’s face.

Seeing Aida’s smile, I think,

Even in this world there's no flower,

It doesn’t look desolate.

In comparison with Aida, the beauty of fresh flowers

Is so stupid——even eyes can’t blink. . .

◎The Peach-Blossom Fan by Hong Zhu tr. Lush Greenness

This ancestral folding silk fan

Undoubtedly belongs to River Qinhuai. The riverside peach trees

Surely bloom more bright-coloured than others elsewhere.

The bloodstains that you spattered on the fan are

Considered the most special one among the flowers.

The wind had no bones, and you waved a fan

To make the wind own bones.

The legend of this river

Is destined to have something to do with a woman.

The surfaces of the fan, front and back, represent

Respectively: night and day, living and death, love and hatred,

This life and after life. Your hands have to

Commit to all this. Like drooping nightfall, your long hair

Grows into one tributary of Qinhuai River.

The river water had no bones, and you left your shadow in

To have the water possess bones.

Your fan is the bone of the wind,

Your shadow the bone of the water. And your name

The bone for this piece of history.

Other people’s flowers are thought to be light as feathers

But your flowers are always weighing heavily.
