后现代绘画的基本特征之一是形象的回归。

这一方面基于对现代艺术在形式上的反拨，另一方面是基于对所表达内容和信息的内在需要。

后现代绘画的艺术家表现出对现实社会强烈的参与意识，这种意识尤其体现在德国的新表现艺术中。
