DTS ES是鉴别一张DVD是否为发烧级的重要标志。最早有DTS ES音效的DVD之一是著名的恐怖片《鬼入侵》DVD。

很多朋友对DVD碟中的DTS ES音轨到底是矩阵式Matrix 6.1的还是全分离式Discrete 6.1感到很难分辨。最初的DTS ES系统是以与Dolby Digital EX 6.1相似的矩阵式Matrix 6.1来工作的。后来，由于市场竞争的需要，同时也为了追求更好的环绕音效，DTS公司推出了DTS ES Discrete 6.1系统，它从制作、编码到最后解码都是完全按独立的6.1声道进行，所以会有更好的分离度效果。

在新型的具备DTS ES 6.1 Discrete声道解码功能的AV放大器电路中，可以检测到这个信号，同时启动6.1解码电路，该隐藏的数字后中置环绕声道信号就会被还原出来。总之，DTS ES 6.1 Discrete才是真正的6.1声道音轨，是最高级别的DVD音频形式。最后，目前拥有DTS ES音轨的DVD都会在包装盒上明确地表明为矩阵式Matrix 6.1或全分离式Discrete 6.1，方便了影迷们挑选。

不论DTS ES 6.1 Matrix 音轨还是DTS ES Discrete 6.1音轨，都是与原有的数字5.1声道兼容的，不必担心买了6.1音轨的碟放不出来，只是没有新的6.1系统的话，只能按原来5.1音效来欣赏而已。
