芝加哥《words without borders》

必须要感谢我的翻译凯伦和上原，当然还有责编苏珊。他们严谨的作风，让我充满敬佩。为这个短篇，凯伦和苏珊和我通信了二十余回，大到从小说的结构与艺术上的探讨，小至为一个字词翻译的精准，不厌其烦地反复沟通和商量，从授权到翻译，竟费了两三个月的时间。凯伦已年届八十，专业文学翻译家，其严谨的作风令我肃然起敬的同时，又多少有些心里不安。印象深刻的还有责编苏珊，小说翻译好后，她又指出了小说中她认为可以删节的部分。她提出了很高的修改意见，最后让我心悦诚服地接受了她的观点。《鬼节》将在《Words Without Borders》（芝加哥）和《中国现代文学》（日）译发。另感谢残雪老师过高的推荐语，一并贴上。

                                         About the Young Writer Zheng Xiaolu

郑小驴非常年轻，今年才25岁，他在一家文学杂志做编辑。他写这篇作品时大概是22岁。

Zheng Xiaolu, editor of a literary magazine, is only twenty-five years old. He was probably twenty-two when he wrote this story.

去年他跟一位编辑到我家来，同我讨论我的作品的出版事宜。后来他将他的作品寄给我看。我读了他的短篇小说之后大吃一惊。因为他还这么年轻，小说就写得如此老练，并且在字里行间透出一股黑沉沉的力量。

Last year, he and another editor visited me to discuss how I arrange for publication of my works.  Later on, he sent his stories to me.  After reading his short stories, I was astonished, because he is still so young and yet he writes like an old hand.  Moreover, hidden  forcefulness shows through between the lines.

他对人心的洞悉深而冷静，但你能感到他有一颗敏感的心。我认为他的最好的短篇，可以同我国伟大的先辈作家鲁迅的作品媲美。现在刊登的这篇《鬼节》应该可以算作他的代表作。这篇作品显示了他的惊人的独特的才华，我感到这位青年作家前程无量。

He has a sober and profound view of people’s minds, and you can also feel his sensitive heart. I think his best works can be favorably compared with those of Lu Xun, the pre-eminent writer of early twentieth century China.  “Festival of Ghosts,” his first story to be translated into English and published abroad, demonstrates his striking, distinctive talent.  I believe this young writer has a promising future.
