   The bridge functions as a link over a main arterial route into the heart of historic Edinburgh, between a multi-storey car park and the St James shopping centre. Formed from a series of interlocking helixes it presented significant analytical and construction challenges. Analysis took into account locked in stresses due to the tube bending processes and likely fabrication tolerances. Bridge dynamics analysis showed excellent modes of vibration and pedestrian induced vibration analysis showed accelerations well below perceptible thresholds. Of particular note is the attention to detail demonstrated by clean lines and clever incorporation of glass at roof and handrail levels.

   Fabrication involved compromise within the analytical tolerances expected, and the whole bridge was fully butt welded in a workshop jig then cut into five pieces for transportation to site. Erected and site welded over the main road during three Sunday road closures it was ready for fit-out without further disruption to traffic. Clearly such a collaboration between Engineer and Steelworker has ensured that Greenside Place Bridge deserves the Institution's Special Award.
