Over the past ten years,
I have been interviewed by every major US television network and countless other print and broadcast media from around the world.
I have become very experienced in dealing with foreign media.
This seems to be an area that causes trouble for a lot of Chinese.
Personally, I no longer give much thought to this type of experience.
It really is simple to deal with foreign media
and definitely not something to feel threatened by.
In fact, I don't agree with the majority of Chinese
who say the "western" media is biased against China
or unfairly criticizes China.
They are just highly trained not accept answers based on "face".
Here is my heartfelt advice for dealing with foreign media successfully:
1. Be honest.
Honesty is always respected,
even when the truth is unpleasant.
2. Be direct. Reporters aren't interested in slogans and fancy language.
They want
straight
3. Answer questions from your heart without worrying about "face".
Foreign reporters have experience all over the world and do a lot of research before conducting an interview.
It is easy for them to spot the difference between real and fake!
Here is a famous quote about media:
这是关于媒体的著名描述:
We report on planes that crash, not planes that land!
The meaning is that the nature of news is negative. The purpose of reporters is to ask provocative questions and find an interesting story.
Here are some examples from my recent interview with ABC.
ABC: 1.3 billion people speak Chinese,
it's the most widely spoken language in the world.
Why are you teaching English?
LY: Beacause right now, English is the
international language. If you want to learn from the world and you
want to spread your culture and your language
ABC: So, your dream is eventually for everyone to be speaking Chinese,
with no need for English?
No. My dream is for everyone to learn foreign languages and to be able to communicate more freely.
ABC: But...your
lectures are very patriotic and you spend a lot of time talking
about how proud you are to be Chinese, don't you worry that by
promoting English you are opening up Chinese to
more
LY: I think Chinese students have the wrong
idea
They think it is an
easy, wild life,
I hate all these things.
I tell them to absorb useful things, things that will move them forward.
ABC: Then you dislike America?
LY: Not at all. I love
ABC: You don't want Chinese people to become more American,
What is your wish for Chinese people?
LY: My wish is for Chinese people to be more responsible, more intelligent, more peaceful and more advanced.
