Ode to the Bamboos amid Rocks

---Zheng Xie

Tr. by 许景城(Peter Jingcheng Xu)

Biting into green hills, thou never loose clutches,

Deepening thy roots in broken rocks where thou grow,

Standing strong still over sundry twists and smutches,

Ignoring any winds, wherever they blow.

Notes:

1.    Zheng Xie (郑燮, 1693-1765), also known as Zheng Banqiao (郑板桥), a native of Xinghua (兴化), Jiangsu, and a renowned poet, painter and calligrapher in Qing Dynasty, is famous for his painting bamboos. He is one of Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou (“扬州八怪”). He was Jinshi (进士), a successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations, and was appointed as the prefect in Wei County (潍县), Shandong during the reign of Qianlong (乾隆).

2.    This poem was written and inscribed by him on the painting of bamboos to extol the good qualities of bamboos, such as strength, toughness and firmness etc, to which thousands of poets and lyrists in China compare their virtues.

Bamboo in the Rock

--- Zheng Xie

Tr. by Xu Yuanchong

Upright stands the bamboo amid green mountains steep;

Its toothlike root in broken rock is planted deep.

It’s strong and firm though struck and beaten without rest,

Careless of the wind from north or south, east or west.

Inscribed on a Painting of Bamboos Growing among Rocks

--- Zheng Xie

Tr. by 王晋熙、文殊

Biting into the green mountains, never to loose their hold,

Deep down the clefts between rocks they strike root.

Though and firm they stand against all manners of tear and blow,

Mindless of wind, whichever direction it comes from.

选自:王晋熙、文殊.《金元明清绝句英译》.外语教学与研究出版社,2002.

Bamboo and Rock

---Zheng Banqiao

Tr. by 随你译

Between broken rocks striking my root deep,

I bite the mountain green and won’t let go.

From whichever direction the winds leap,

I remain strong, though dealt many a blow.

Bamboos And Rock

In rock's cracks they root deep to stay.
