Gary Ye, general manager of Holiday Inn Shanghai West, who has a career in the hotel industry for over 20 years, should be attributed to for winning this award, yet he said modestly, “It’s not a prize for myself, what makes us competitive is the youth of our management team. All our team members are passionate, hungry for success and willing to make a difference right now. The hotel was launched in January, low season of a year, but we managed to make the profit. As a hotel of 400 rooms, we had only 145 staffs and every one of them made extra endeavor and missed their days off for weeks, but we kept a high spirit and firm confidence in success”. Merely strong will cannot achieve the success, the sophisticated planning made by the sales and human resource team led by Gary Ye contributed a lot as well. The carefully chosen opening date with the warm up pre sale, and the well arranged time schedule for all staffs and part time workers had improved the overall efficiency significantly.
Such knowledge for the entire team’s ability and proper arrangement to accomplish the success demands great insight and decision. As one of the few Chinese general managers, Gary knows his homeland, and is more sensitive to the domestic business partner relations, business modes and the culture community. “I grew up here and I’m always ready for it. Holiday Inn is one of the most famous international hotel brands that first entered the China market, and there are over 50 Holiday Inns in China of which over 50% of the guests are Chinese. The localization for the management team by InterContinental Hotel Group started as early as 2000, and now the proportion of local managers keeps increasing, taking a leading place in the entire hotel industry.
 
Besides, as one of the assessors for the potential general managers of InterContinental Hotel Group, Gary made a lot of efforts to cultivate talents for the group. However Gary always defines himself as a learner and sharer rather than a teacher. “I’m making my own continuous progress by learning on coaching. I’ve been serving and studying the group for years and had some experiences. The group wishes my experiences to be shared with future managers, and to me this is for my understanding of the Chinese market might differ from that of other foreign general managers in aspects of ideas and views.”

Meanwhile, Holiday Inn is going through relauch program across the globe which will be done by the end of this year. Holiday Inn Shanghai West was established according to the new Holiday Inn brand standard, and its first priority is the pleasure of the guests such as when to play a certain type of music to delight the guests and which kind of scent to use in the lobby. Only by making these specific details perfect can the hotel get better satisfaction rate from its guests.
