The Tennis Masters Cup will be back to Shanghai for the fifth year in November, and the Hilton Shanghai will continue to serve as the Official Hotel this year after the tournaments in 2002 and 2005-07, responsible for accommodating the officials and sponsors as well as the players. “We feel very honored to be part of the tournament, which involves every associate and every department as one team. The Tennis Masters Cup is not only a lot of fun, but also is an opportunity to show our versatility to the world,” said Guy, himself a great fan of sports. Attending the Beijing Olympics held earlier this year left an indelible impression on him. “The Games added spice to Beijing. Similarly, the Tennis Masters Cup has helped Shanghai to attract and hold the world’s attention.”
Emmanuel Souliere, the hotel’s Executive Chef, has been the soul of the catering team since the first Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai in 2002. As the Official Sponsor and Caterer, the Hilton Shanghai will provide more than 50,000 meals during the tournament, and maintain the hotel’s normal operation, which means a huge amount of work. Luckily the team is fully prepared to meet the new challenge and benefit also from past experience. Previous servicing this world class event mean that the Hotel is able to add enhancements and improvements in all aspects, including the flavor of and presentation of food, uniform and service standards. All part of a detailed plan.
The Hilton Shanghai is also not playing solo this year. As the number of spectators and sponsors grows, the Conrad Shanghai and the Doubletree Kunshan, two soon-to-open hotels from the Hilton Family of Brands, will also assist. The three form a strong and capable catering team. The hotel kitchen is working around the clock (or almost), and so is the entire staff who have made great contributions to the tournament. “Difficulties ahead will not prevent us from moving forward, fast and stable. I’ll do my best to support the tournament, and I’m not alone. Without the support and cooperation of other departments I couldn’t have accomplished so much,” observed Emmanuel.
The successful Executive Chef has a very tight schedule, which keeps him busy all year long, overseeing the catering service for ATP tennis, Formula One and a golf tournament scheduled next year in Shanghai as well as the regular kitchen operations. The Hilton Shanghai enjoys the reputation of an established caterer, thanks to the efforts of Emmanuel Souliere.
Speaking also of his strong attachment to the hotel, Kenny Gong, Executive Floor Manager who joined the Hilton Shanghai 16 years ago, said, “Hilton has a very high brand value, and an outstanding mechanism which keeps its properties running smoothly. My experience acquired in various departments over the years tells me that a hotel staff must be good at learning, while the hotel should give its employees opportunities to learn. Hilton puts me on a platform where I can show my talent and abilities. It offers me a career deserving careful management.” It is this awareness that supports him to fully perform his duties during the Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai 2008.
No word better describes the service the Masters Cup players have received than “personal”. They use personal towels and bathrobes bearing the name of the player, which can be taken away as a souvenir on their departure, and a private office is provided by the hotel for special purposes, not to mention vehicles and drivers for the exclusive use of the players, and separate alleys and dining section meant to protect their privacy. In no circumstance would the hotel management and staff leak player information; food is prepared per personal requests, and rooms arranged to cater for personal tastes; player rooms are attended to by a special team and the name list is kept at the security department; and a lot more. From these measures we can clearly see what great efforts the Hilton Shanghai has made to satisfy the organizing committee, sponsors and players. In fact, the hotel would embark on preparations, as early as in January, though the tournament does not open until November. Additionally preparations have already started at the Hilton Shanghai for the ATP Masters Series Shanghai 2009.
After successfully accommodating 5 Masters Cup tournaments since 2002, the Hilton Shanghai now treats the organizing committee officials and tennis players like old friends who would meet one other in Shanghai every November. Everybody knows each other. Kenny said they had so carefully considered everything and simulated every situation in advance that they didn’t think star players’ special requirements special, much less annoying. That is to say, they can receive the guests without burden.
It’s been twenty-one years since 1988 when the Hilton Shanghai was opened, and a golden era has clearly begun for the hotel, whose status as a long-time market leader is sustained by its continuos improvements in every respect, lower staff turnover and consistent service, as well as its devotion and contribution to international sports events. “Great Service Never Goes Out Of Style” Shanghai's night sky is lit up by the flames of a passionate collaboration between the Tennis Masters Cup and a 5-star luxury hotel, the Hilton Shanghai.
