Beijing Marriott Hotel City
Shanghai
Tang。
The night seven years back that
marks Beijing’s being awarded the host country of the 2008 Summer
Olympics after beating several competitors will never fade in our
memory. Over the past seven years, Beijing has been making steady
progress in every respect. Bird’s Nest, Water Cubic and other
Olympic venues are being completed, and urban planning largely
improved, all indicating that China’s capital city is fully ready
for the Olympic Games. Red, a color closely related to China,
suggests an air of festivity and happiness. The Beijing Olympics
has aroused not only the enthusiasm of the 1300-million Chinese,
but also the world’s attention on the Middle Kingdom. The curtain
is to be lifted soon, and the entire nation is burning with
passion, just like the holy flame blazing throughout the sports
event. The sixteen days, though brief, are to be remembered for a
lifetime. Beijing, as the focus of the world’s attention, will
extend both arms to embrace visitors from across the world and show
them its best look. The same is expected from the various hotels in
Beijing, which make up an integral part of the 29th
Olympiad.
Marriott International, Inc. is
a leading lodging company with more than 3,000 lodging properties
in the United States and 68 other countries and territories. One of
the latest additions to its global portfolio is in Beijing, which
opens exactly during the Olympic Games 2008. The hotel, Beijing
Marriott Hotel City Wall, is some fresh blood to help sharpen
Marriott’s competitive edge in Beijing, and open a new chapter in
company history. We arranged a feature interview with its general
manager, Mr. Rauf Malik, for a better understanding of the new
member of the Marriott family.
Rauf Malik boasts a wealth of
managerial experience acquired from his executive positions with
various Marriott properties. Malik’s latest post prior to his
transfer to Beijing was the general manager of the Renaissance
Yangtze Shanghai Hotel with which he had worked for two years.
Shanghai is so attractive in his eyes that the veteran hotelier
feared he couldn’t devote equal passion to Beijing. He is wrong.
“Before I came here, I didn’t think Beijing would appeal to me as
much as Shanghai; the city is more historic than vibrant. That‘s
why I am kind of surprised to find it to be such a charming city. I
love the people here, who are very friendly, and their way of
living. This city has awakened a special feeling in me, with the
approaching inauguration of Beijing Marriott Hotel City Wall and
the Beijing Olympics.”
Strategically located at the
CBD of Beijing, where business and diplomatic activities are
frequent, Beijing Marriott Hotel City Wall is adjacent to
Chang’anjie Street as well as Jianguomen Subway Station &
Beijing Railway Station. It is also connected to Beijing's renowned
Ming Dynasty City Wall Ruins Park, and close to the city's Embassy
District in the Ritan Park area. A 30-minute car ride will take you
to Beijing Capital International Airport 24 kilometres away. The
largest Marriott property outside the US and the biggest hotel in
China’s capital city has 1312 rooms, elegantly decorated to ensure
an ultimate hospitality experience. Guests can pamper themselves by
dining at each of the seven restaurants and bars, where a variety
of local and international food options are on offer. The Quan Spa
draws on the restorative power of water to relax and restore, and
the indoor heated Olympic size swimming pool offers an alternative
option. The vast 4000-sqm banquet and conference space, the largest
available in Beijing’s hospitality market, is spread over the
second and third floors, divided into 3 ballrooms and more than a
dozen function rooms fitted with state-of-the-art facilities,
including the latest products of advanced audio-visual technology,
LCD projector and screen, stand-alone speaker and light control
system, wireless internet access, conference & interpretation
system and stage lighting, to ensure that any corporate conference
or presentation is a success. Every detail contributes to a
comfortable home away from home.
A lot of effort was entailed in
the exterior design, which drew inspiration from the ancient
ramparts built more than six centuries ago by the Chinese emperors,
echoing the official name of the hotel, Beijing Marriott Hotel City
Wall. “We are very proud of the ancient city wall, which connect
our culture with the historic city of Beijing and its cultural
heritage. We’re part of the history, too. I’d like to say
something about our uniform, which uses Chinese elements like red
color and dragon pattern. We hope our wall can become one of the
major tourist attractions in Beijing after the Olympics,” said
Malik, his face beaming with pride. The general manager was
evidently in high spirits from beginning to end, his humorous
remarks filling the interview with hearty laughter. “Today I am in
the bellboy’s outfit. Every bellboy will be dressed up like an
ancient Chinese warrior, and take good care of our guests like a
real one. The regal color is sure to impress the
guests.”
The general manager has been
actively engaging in the hospitality industry for nearly thirty
years, of which sixteen are under the flag of Marriott Inc., whilst
he worked with properties in Asia, Europe, Middle East and the US.
Other hotel executives are all outstanding hotel experts with rich
experience acquired in international hotels. They make up a strong
and capable management team. Passionate, witty and humorous, Rauf
Malik is in constant pursuit of a sophisticated lifestyle. The
disciple of Franck Muller, Piaget, Ermenegildo Zegna, Giorgio
Armani and other luxury labels has also developed a special
interest in traditional Chinese style clothes, and his favorite
brand in this category is Shanghai Tang. The quality of one’s
life, according to Malik, is not only reflected in his material
life, but also in his spiritual world, in the way he gets along
with people and handles problems. It is of particular importance
for a hotel general manager to keep a close and friendly
relationship with every staff, who, as an inseparable part of the
hotel, grows up with the maturing hotel. He relies heavily upon the
people-oriented philosophy, since man is the key of success. Take
care of the staff, and they will take care of the guests, he
believes.
The hotel’s emphasis on its
staff especially during the Olympic Games is evident. Naturally,
the associates are required to cope with higher standards,
“because we are highly enthusiastic about the Beijing Olympics,
which we think is an ideal occasion for China (Beijing) to promote
itself, to show its capacity and convince the world that this
country has been actively engaging in global affairs, and making
contributions to the international community. Business
opportunities coming with the Olympics will attract more people to
Beijing and China in the years to come. More similar international
events are anticipated. That’s why we should invest more in
training our associates, to improve their qualities and abilities,
which will accordingly enhance our culture.”
The general manager is elated
at the prospect of Marriott Beijing Hotel City Wall, opening during
the Olympic Games 2008 to make up for the shortage of high-end
hotel rooms in the market. “Both the soaring demand & limited
supply during the Olympics and the lowering of the occupancy rate
afterwards are natural results. Generally speaking, the hospitality
market in Beijing and China is quite big, and we only ask for a
slice of the cake, given the fierce competitions. No pain, no gain.
I trust my associates, and believe we can contribute to the booming
local market,” Malik said in a firm and confident
tone.
Marriott Beijing Hotel City
Wall is sure to add color to China’s capital city. It’s a home
away from your own home. Mr. Rauf Malik, together with all the
hotel staff, welcomes the guests from all over the world to
experience the hotel’s elegance and luxury, enthusiasm and care,
and celebrate the Beijing Olympic Games 2008 with a contented
heart.
