A NEW CONCEPT IN DINING OPENS AT SHANGRI-LA HOTEL, QINGDAO

Story & Photos: by Shangri-la hotel,Qingdao

Café Yum and Praline, located at level one of the new Valley Wing extension of Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao is now open.  Designed by renowned international company SuperPotato, the ultra modern 312-seat Café Yum replaces Coffee Garden, which has ceased operation, while Praline replaces the former deli corner.

Café Yum has five private rooms and four semi-private rooms that can seat up to 12 people.  While each glass-walled room has a different setting, they are fused with the same dining mood that allows guests to enjoy the scenes from the kitchens.

In line with the concept of bringing the image of the sea into the restaurant, the designer chose natural materials such as granite for the food stations, integrating with wood for flooring and ceiling, and softening with carpet to emphasise the warmth and relaxing feel from the different textures.  For furniture, white oak and teak wood are used for different table shapes in different sections to avoid unused corners.  The tables are simple and are not meant to be show items, as the texture and the natural changing of the colour of the wood over time will blend in with the concept of the restaurant, leaving the food as the focus.  Chairs of different colours instead of natural tones follow the colour concept of using the blue waters of the sea.  From area to area, chair fabrics with matching colours blend with the design yet give each area a defined character to exude the natural vibrancy and excitement all around.

The designer used "water" and "light" to reflect the city of Qingdao in a modern way as a beautiful and popular resort while being developed as an international trade city by using "water" elements of water ripples, bubbles, ice cubes and blue lighting as decoration as well as to keep the sensation of the sea alive.  The glass partitions and walls display Chinese artwork in an artistically stacked style known by the designer as “Accumulation Wall” that feature snuff bottles, porcelain, locks and fruit jars that provide a glimpse into old China.  These art deco walls are talking points and are like a walk-in art gallery that will fascinate both foreign and Chinese customers.

Café Yum has seven individual open cooking stations that treat guests to the theatrics of food preparation, where talented chefs take centre stage entertaining guests with action and interacting with them about the freshly prepared dishes.  The cold food is arranged in such a way that the fresh specialities of the Western, Japanese and Korean sections are in a common buffet area but close to their individual hot sections.  The Western section features premium grilled meats, fish and fresh pasta cooked according to the guests’ requirements.  Close by, the Korean section delivers items such as Grilled Beef and Bulgolgi Next is the Japanese section, which serves Teppanyaki and Robatayaki favourites as well as a wide range of authentic simmered or stewed Japanese dishes and the signature Bamboo Salmon Teriyaki dish.  The Chinese section is the largest buffet section and incorporates a strong emphasis on the best of China's local cuisine such as hot pot wok and steamed dishes, handmade noodles and wood-fired Beijing Duck.  Highly visible is the live seafood section showcasing the best of Qingdao's seafood in a large fish tank that offers three levels of buffet or a market-priced live seafood choice.

Lastly, the colourful and playful dessert section is strategically located at the entrance to tempt the taste buds of the diner towards a long-lasting end of the dining experience or to take away favourite sweets at Praline next door.

Praline, nestled next to Café Yum, integrates neatly with Café Yum's concept.  Guests will find freshly prepared bakery items, pastry and premium chocolates tastefully displayed and fashionably packed as takeaway or giveaways, including coffee and tea beverages available “on the go” or to be sipped leisurely in a quiet corner with just 22 seats.
