If hotels have become part of
your life, you shouldn’t be unfamiliar with Marriott. Marriott
International Inc. is a leading worldwide hospitality company with
nearly 2900 lodging properties in 68 countries and territories. The
recipient of the Gallup Great Workplace Award and Fortune 100 Best
Companies to Work For award.
Having interviewed a good
number of hotel general managers, we sat face to face with, for the
first time, a technical expert, Mr. W. K. Mak, regional vice
president, engineering, Asia Pacific of Marriott International,
Inc. We focused our discussion on “environment protection”, one
of the most frequently discussed topics nowadays. Unlike most of us
who remain merely in empty words, Marriott International has not
only added the eco-conscious philosophy into its global management
strategy, but put it into real practice, which won our admiration.
We’re also happy with the company’s great achievements in this
respect.
Obligation: Environment
Protection
World environment has been
deteriorating over the first few years of the 21st century. It
brings people worldwide to the realization that environment is of
vital importance in the campaign to protect our home, Earth. Just
recently British designer Anya Hindmarch has released her “I am
not a plastic bag” shopping bag. This bag, available in a limited
version, embodies the spirit of environment protection. In
Australia, Sydney kicked off “Live Earth” on the afternoon of
July 7 (Beijing Time). Similar things have been happening
elsewhere. Long before that, Marriott International has felt a
compelling obligation to protect our environment.
Mr. Mak said, environment
protection is a long-term undertaking, and it became part of our
everyday routine years back. We feel that this year is the best
time for Marriott to announce our commitment to this undertaking to
the world. I believe all the Marriott lodging properties have
deepened their awareness in protecting the environment since April
22 (the Earth Day). But this is just our first step.
Marriott has designated April
as “Environmental Awareness Month”, added June M. Farrell at the
side, who serves vice president of
Marriott’s Global Public Relations[L1] . We initiated this activity on April 22,
2007. However, we’ve been keenly conscious of the environment
problems since a long time ago, and Marriott International actually
launched an Environmentally Conscious Hospitality Operation program
(ECHO) as early as in 1994. We feel we have the responsibility to
protect the environment, strongly believing it will benefit us
immensely. Since then we have been very careful, and now
environment protection is part of our operation. We have a very
solid foundation in this respect.
New Standard: Energy
Conservation
Marriott International plans to
help promote True Green – 100 Everyday Ways You Can Contribute
to A Healthier Planet, a book authored by Kim McKay, co-founder
of Clean Up the World, and Bonnie Jennin, director of Clean Up the
World. This book is now available in the United States, and we
expect it in China market very soon. The notion of environment
protection hasn’t rooted deep in China, that’s why a book like
True Green is needed to help the Chinese do what we can,
however petty it is, so as to protect the environment in which we
live.
As one of the leaders in the
hospitality trade, Marriott International is also ranked among the
precursors of “green” operations. Green operation is one of the
company’s global strategies. Marriott’s hotels around the world
have been working towards reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by
nearly one-fifth, that is, 1 million tons, since 2000. That’s
equivalent to taking 140,000 cars off the road. With the
“Re-Lamp” campaign, the company replaced 450,000 light bulbs with
fluorescent lighting in 2006, saving 65% on overall lighting costs
and energy usage in guest rooms. At Marriott, guests are encouraged
to reuse their linens and towels during their hotel stays. By doing
so, Marriott has conserved water and use of detergents, saving
energy on hot water by 11~17%. Marriott’s “Ozone Activated
Laundry” and “Formula One Systems” can save up to 25% in energy
used in laundry systems. Replacement of 4,500 outdoor signs with
LED and fiber optic technology yielded a 40% reduction in outdoor
advertising use in its first year. It has also reduced hot water
usage by 10% by replacing 400,000 showerheads. Over 60% Marriott
properties around the world have installed water flow-restriction
devices. Marriott properties around the globe have been using PCs,
laptops, printers, scanners and other electronic products which are
compliant with Energy Star standards. With its high-tech products
disposal program, Marriott has collected thousands of used PCs and
cell phones for reuse or safe disposal.
When enquired of the benefits
arising from energy conservation, Mr. Mak showed us a long list of
figures with evident pride. In comparison to year 2005, Marriott
properties in China, which are more than twenty in total, reduced
1,275,030 kwh on electricity, 6,510,020 cubic meters on gas, 820
tons of petroleum and 121,511 tons of water in 2006. The reduction
of electric power, natural gas and petroleum is equivalent to
reducing the emissions of carbon dioxide and carbon by 3,366 tons
and 916 tons, respectively, which helped to clean the air. Without
Marriott’s eco-friendly philosophy, these hotels are unlikely to
accomplish so much. I have every reason to believe that the day for
the eventual improvement of global environment would come very soon
if everyone in this society works toward more sustainable
environmental practices.
Management Strategy:
Education on Environment Protection
Marriott International has over
2,800 lodging properties around the globe. They practice the same
systems, of which the Environmentally Conscious Hotel Operations
program (ECHO) has attracted the greatest attention. With ECHO,
Marriott works in partnership with hotel owners and franchisees to
implement sustainable environmental practices, which reflect the
environmental interests and concerns of the guests, associates,
business partners and communities. Interested people and parties
can check out Marriott’s international website for details and
latest movements and achievements.
According to Mr. Mak, education
and training to enhance people’s eco-awareness breaks ground for
their environmentally conscious practices. Trivialities can also
contribute to protecting the environment. Instead of being some
work assigned to certain departments, environment protection should
be collective efforts to which every Marriott associate, department
and property contributes. At each Marriott lodging property,
eco-related education is actually initiated at the welcome-party
for the new recruits, and carried on by the environment committee
affiliated to the hotel. This committee, normally headed by hotel
general manager and the chief engineer, takes responsibility to
organize and carry out environmentally conscious campaigns and
activities. Marriott has offered two training courses to the
engineers since 2004: one is about clean air initiatives, the other
water conservation. Engineers who have attended the training
courses should accordingly educate their colleagues.
Still feeling unsatisfied with
Marriott’s achievements, Mr. Mak had a clear vision for the
future, hoping the group could do a better job in saving energy,
water and all, and exceed what it had accomplished before.
Hopefully guests could give Marriott a hand with their
eco-conscious efforts, however small it might be, so that our world
would look different.
We agree with Mr. Mak that
clear goals drive one forward. Thanks to its diligent associates,
from housekeeping to engineering, who join hands to save energy and
practice recycling, Marriott International has gained enormous
accomplishments in improving the ecosystem. “Thinking of you”,
always.
Somebody remarked jokingly that
Mr. Mak was born for Marriott. At Marriott, W. K. Mak has never
stopped learning, nor has he ceased practicing. We see in him not
only a perseverant engineer, but an hotelier in inexhaustible
pursuit of the goals he has set for himself.
