Dear Cherry,
I am happy to report that I have completed my reviews of all the nice restaurnats at Le Royal Meridien Shanghai. Last Sunday I attended the new Sunday Brunch at Le Royal Meridien's casual cafe style restaurant, Le Bistrot. With brunch beginning at noon and ending at 3, I arrived a few minutes early so I could look around. Getting off the elevator on the lobby floor, I was immediately affected by the beautifully decorated lobby of yellow, back lit marble and contrasting dark accents on the floors and walls. Walking around to the left I entered the open and expansive area which includes the restaurant Le Bistrot, the lobby bar, and the French restaurant Allure. I was greeted immediately by Eddy Zhu, the restaurant manager of Le Bistrot. They seated me at a nice table by the window, actually a wall of glass, with views of the large patio area where the barbeque (BBQ) grills were located. Outside seating was also available, and many guests took advantage of the opportunity to sit in the open air. I preferred, however, to enjoy the air conditioning on the other side of the glass. Everything about this setting was modern. The crystal glassware was very nice, including MIKASA champagne flutes, and flatware by Crosby Hall with a hammered silver look. The entire restaurant was very modern and open with the yellow back lit marble walls continuing from the lobby, with contrasting dark and light marble floors with big round ivory colored marble support pillars. When combined with the walls of glass to the outside world, the visual effect of this well lit expanse is quite pleasing. The tables and chairs are all of dark wood, with seating either contrasting in a light beige or dark blue depending on which section of the room you are in.
I decided to sit quietly and observe how the brunch process began, while sipping on a couple of Bloody Marys. The wait staff was walking around with trays of Caiparinas (a Brazilian rum concoction), Watermellon Martinis, and a Strawberry drink, giving them to whomever wanted one. Also provided was free flowing Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial Champagne. Other adult beverages were available on call. Modern club style music was delivered by a DJ and blanketed the entire scene with a relaxing effect. A Tai Chi demonstration was provided on the patio, with participants dressed in traditional Chinese attire.
The food offerings at this brunch were extensive. All restaurants in Le Royal Meridien Shanghai participated in this brunch. On the main area of Le Bistrot there are offerings from Le Bistrot and Ai Mei, their Cantonese restaurant, and as the room extends into the French restaurant Allure, there are French offerings and Italian selections from the Italian restaurant Favola. Based on the expansiveness of the food offerings, I can only hope to give you a general flavor of the samplings offered. There were several stations offering different cuisine. I tried Chinese, Thai, Japanese, French, Italian, mixed seafood varieties, BBQ, a carving station, and desserts. I always start a brunch with cold seafood, and here we had an array of crab, oysters, mussels, shrimp, squid, and sushi. Next I proceeded to the patio to sample the offerings from the BBQ. Here I tried two kinds of fish, skewers of shrimp and squid, sausages, pork ribs, lamb chops, asparagus and sweet potatoes (prepared like those we see on the streets of Shanghai). At the Chinese station I got some Peking duck, and next to them is the carving station where I tried some prime rib of beef and a pork chop cut off the rack. For dessert I started with a freshly prepared fruit crepe with whipped cream and chocolate sauce on top, then proceeded to the vast array of other alternatives, including pies, cakes, tarts, creme brulee, and countless other custom creations. Needless to say my diet was shot for the day and dinner was not required.
I thought the service was excellent, the staff being polite and obviously well trained and management was present at all levels. I also had the pleasure of talking with the assistant restaurant manager Lucy Jiang, hotel food and beverage manager Janet Si, and Allure's restaurant manager Fanny Cervera. I thought the food was good, reflecting my previous experience with the individual restaurants at Le Royal Meridien Shanghai. I particularly enjoyed the BBQ offerings and the pork chop at the carving station. All in all this is a very nice way to spend 3 hours on a Sunday and I will be back again to try some of the possibilities I missed because I could eat no more. Unfortunately, since the Sunday Brunch is considered a special event, our Grand Hotels Reader's Club Card discount does not apply. In my case, however, with the free flowing champagne I'm sure I covered the discount!
