Old World Meets
Nouveau Chic
文:万山
In a city incandescent with
modernity, in a town jiving with culture and on a street steeped in
history, 1929 beckons with a whimsical mix of old world
architecture and a nouveau chic interior.
The hotel consists of five
conservation shop-houses built in 1929, and features 32
individually designed rooms decked in a mix of classic designer and
retro vintage furniture. 1929 is conveniently located near the
Chinatown MRT station, a short walk away from the buzzing clubs and
restaurants located at Club Street, and a 5 minute taxi ride from
the heart of the business district.
Guests will find that no two
rooms are alike, with everything from furnishing and beds right
down to the clear glass bathrooms being unique. 1929 also offers 2
specially designed suites with outdoor baths set in tropical roof
gardens that overlook the bright lights and bustling streets of
charming Chinatown. Unique, hip and comfortable, rooms are stylish
yet truly affordable.
The hotel features a selection
of unusual and classic chairs from the owner’s private collection.
Highlights include a Joseph Hoffman ‘Kubus’ sofa designed in
1910, vintage Eames LCW and DCW chairs dating from 1946, Arne
Jacobsen ‘Swan’ and ‘Egg’ chairs, a pair of Poul Voulther
‘Corona’ chairs, vintage Pierre Paulin ‘Tulip’ chairs, a Hans
Wagner ‘Bear’ chair and the Verner Panton chair. The pride of
1929, almost all the chairs are genuine, vintage and unique
pieces.
A sense of history is evoked as
you walk down the corridors of 1929, with a wide showcase of
B&W archival photos of olden-day Singapore from the early
20th century. 1929 is now protected as a
‘conservation’ building, preserved for its historical
architecture, which grows increasingly rare in modern
Singapore.
Modern technology is not
forgotten, as the hotel also features state-of-the-art flat-screen
Phillips LCD TVs, clock radio CD players, digital phones and
broadband connections in every room and wireless broadband service
in the hotel lobby. Guests at the hotel will also enjoy the open
air rooftop Jacuzzi, tiled with glass mosaic tiles, and landscaped
roof garden.
The hotel plays host to Ember,
a cool, new bar and restaurant which serves inventive and modern
international cuisine with an Asian twist. Overlooking the hotel
lobby, Ember serves guests and city dwellers alike as a coffee shop
dining room, bar and lounge. The restaurant is checked out with
reproduction Z chairs in cream and dark wood and vintage Louis
Poulsen lamps “rescued” from the former Danish parliament
building.
1929 is Singapore’s Heritage
Hip Hotel that meets the needs of the individualistic, modern
traveler. The hotel is daring and stylish, truly affordable and
utterly cool, it promises to be an urban adventure which re-invents
the hotel experience in Asia.
Room prices range from S$190
for a suite with rooftop garden.
