瑜伽——完美的运动?
Is Yoga The Perfect
Exercise?

Huiping Mo thinks so.
And judging by the hordes of
students who flock to her popular hot yoga classes in Beijing it is
seems she is not alone in her assessment. "When I first started
practicing yoga I felt it was a very mild form of exercise, it was
nice, but it didn't really give me the type of workout I was
looking for," says Mo.
While yoga means different
things to different people, Mo was looking for the ultimate
exercise - something that could keep her classically trained
dancer's body in top form. She wasn't looking for mental bliss or
spiritual guidance, just something she could do regularly that
would yield tangible results.
She took up aerobic dance,
swimming, running and weight training although not necessarily in
that order. Mo admits she became somewhat of a gym addict, spending
6 days a week in health clubs either exercising or teaching. What
she learned is that while all forms of exercise and activities are
beneficial, they are not all created equal and each person needs to
find what is right for his or her particular body type, personal
characteristics and lifestyle. Then she found Bikram or "Hot"
Yoga which is a more physically demanding style of hatha yoga
practiced in a heated studio. Now she practices hot yoga
exclusively.
"It's interesting to note that
universally everyone agrees that exercise is important but in the
same breadth will admit they don't exercise or exercise as much as
they should," says Mo. As a teacher who depended upon regular
student visits to sustain her livelihood Mo pondered the reasons
why people couldn't get into the exercise habit on a regular
basis.
When you pose this question to
people the number one reason is "…no time," says Mo.
Mo has heard this over and over
and has a unique perspective on the subject--"…time is usually not
the main issue, it's usually the lack of motivation or the
belief that time spent exercising is not as important as the other
things on one's daily to-do list," says Mo.
Now getting back to the
topic--why is yoga the perfect exercise? "Because
it's an activity you will do. Anyone can do it and it can be done
anywhere. Yoga adjusts to your body, you don't adjust to it. It's
mild when you want it to be and as demanding as you let it be. It
engages the mind, uplifts your spirit and touches you in ways you
never imagined. And don't forget, it is the ultimate low
impact workout. I remember I used to have long debates about which
is the best type of exercise, western health club stuff like
running and weight training or yoga…the discussion would go
on and on until I mention the following--How many people over fifty
do you seeing running? the answer is very few and if you do
see them they are usually walking," exclaims Mo. While Mo admits
that walking is great exercise, it is the simplicity and
practicality of yoga that makes it the perfect exercise in her
humble opinion.
This is also where the
motivation factor lies. Simplicity and practicality enhances
motivation. Mo says, "I plant the seeds of motivation by showing
students that their bodies and health will change by practicing
yoga. The other benefits of yoga are the icing on the
cake."
Yoga is also the perfect
exercise for teachers too. Mo smiles, "I am a facilitator and
guide, when all is said and done, practiced correctly yoga sells
itself--as a teacher, it makes me look good…"
