Mandy is an active young woman. She goes to school like other people her age. She is studying music.

But Mandy is special in one way. Everywhere she goes, her best friend Henry follows. Henry is Mandy’s guide dog. Mandy and Henry do everything together.

Not all dogs can become guide dogs. Guide dogs have to be smart. They also have to faithful to their owners. Labradors, like Henry, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers make good guide dogs.

About 7 or 8 weeks after the puppies are born, they move in with a family. These families are called “Puppy raisers.” They volunteer to raise the puppies for one year. Henry’s first family was the Martins. The Martins had two little girls. Their names were Anna and Mimi. They loved Henry very much.

It is important for guide dogs to have a safe and secure environment. They learn to get with other people. They learn to get along with other animals.

At night, Henry sleeps with Anna and Mimi. It is important for guide dogs to sleep inside the house. The Martins take care of Henry and love him as part of their family.

After one year, it is time to return Henry to the school. Henry needs to receive special training. He learns how to obey commands. “Sit! Come here!” He learns how to wait for the traffic light to change.

Henry is almost ready to be a guide dog. First, guide dogs and their new owners must receive training together. Mandy will learn to give Henry orders and how to take care of him. But there is more training that Henry needs. He must learn to love and trust this new owner.

Mandy walks with Henry to her school. Then they walk back home. Some Henry will know how to get to school and back home by himself.

Hery makes sure Mandy is safe wherever she goes. “Thanks, Henry.” Henry is happy to take care of Mandy.

Even at home Mandy and Henry spends every moment together. Mandy likes to play the piano. And Henry likes to sing along!

Mandy doesn’t feel different because she is blind. She feel special because she has Henry. Not only is Henry her guide dog, he is her best friend.
