Salute and help quake survivors
Chen Weihua
My daughter Chen Ruqian and I worked as volunteers at the Hongbai School in Shifang of Sichuan province from April 27-30. It was arranged by the Cha English Teaching Foundation, but we were so glad that we paid for our own trips.
Life is still hard there even a year after the quake. We were squeezed into two different makeshift shelter houses for young teachers. Our army quilts, tainted with molds, were air dropped a year ago. The tap in the shelter area ran dry most of the time. In fact, my roommate and I used only one bucket of water in about three days. Taking a shower is simply a luxury we would never ask for. The few food stands in the tents set up on the muddy ground were our canteen, where minimum sanitation standards were observed.
The school is a bunch of makeshift shelter houses. The noise of bulldozers and pile-drivers accompanied our lecturing. The class I taught was a merger of two previous classes, after more than 20 lives were lost. Many students were dug out from the debris and many have scars on their faces and scalps. More than 150 students and seven teachers lost their lives during the disaster.
Despite the calamity a year ago, most students and teachers are relatively optimistic. Students frolicked after class, played basketball and rubber band jumping. Teachers also exhibited a good sense of humor in conversation.
My roommate, Liu Jian, is a 26-year-old Chinese language teacher and a poet. He often works late and loves his students and his job. But late at night, he is often haunted by bad dreams since 15 of his students perished last year, with some bodies never found.
Other young teachers we got to know also showed great enthusiasm in their work. This is where the profession of being a teacher becomes truly lofty.
Though we worked hard to teach English, play words games, sing English songs and try to open their horizon and inspire them in study and life, both of us found that we learned more from them and we instead were constantly inspired.
Even we were there for only three days, leaving was never easy. We felt so emotionally connected to them. We want to be back, especially after September when their new school building is put into use. We miss the teachers and students who live, study and teach under such a tough situation.
Help is still desperately needed even a year from the seismic tremor. Electric appliances, such as TV sets and electric pots, would help make their life easier. Mental and psychological comforting is also much needed to help them move on in their life.
More people should join and work as volunteers to help the quake survivors, while they themselves get inspired too.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the students, teachers and their families. We pray for a speedy reconstruction of their homeland, we pray for their future and happiness.
