早晨收到来自美国的消息,美国医学图书馆协会(MLA)通过美国华人图书馆协会向四川地震灾区捐款5000美圆,用于灾区图书馆重建工作。

(Chinese American Librarians Association - Oberlin, Ohio, August 6, 2008) – The Medical Library Association (MLA) recently donated $5,000 to support the rebuilding efforts to the damaged libraries and injured library workers by the massive earthquake disasters in Sichuan Province and the surrounding areas in China. MLA’s donation was made through the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) which launched the fundraising efforts since the happening of the earthquake in May 2008.

The magnitude of the deadliest earthquakes on May 12, 2008 were measured at 8.0 on the Richter scale which did massive destructions to the region, including 69,200 death tolls with 18,195 persons still missing; 374,216 were injured; over 15 million people lived in the hard hit areas, and tens of thousands of buildings collapsed or completely ruined, including libraries, archives, and museums.

“MLA’s donation is very important and timely to help libraries and library workers in the affected area.  We are grateful to MLA and its members for their support through this donation,” said Sally C. Tseng, CALA Honorary Executive Director and the Chair of the Task Force on Rebuilding Libraries in the Earthquake Disastrous Areas in China.  The taskforce, appointed by Dr. Sha Li Zhang, CALA President for 2008-2009, is working collaboratively with the Library Society of China and provincial library associations in the earthquake affected regions to identify the needs.  CALA has received the donations from more than 150 individuals and organizations as of the press time. The funds will be fully used to assist in the library rebuilding projects and for injured library workers in the affected areas.

Founded in 1898, MLA is a nonprofit, educational organization of more than 1,100 institutions and 3,600 individual members in the health sciences information field, committed to educating health information professionals, supporting health information research, promoting access to the world's health sciences information, and working to ensure that the best health information is available to all.

CALA, founded in 1973, is an affiliate of the American Library Association (ALA) since 1976, with a membership of more than 1,000 throughout U.S. and around the world.  CALA is an IRS 501 (c) (3) Non-profit organization and donations to CALA are tax deductible. CALA continues to accept donations to the CALA China Earthquake Libraries Rebuild Fund.  Donations can be made by check payable to CALA and mailed to:
       Dr. Shuyong Jiang, CALA Treasurer
