据说这首算是英文诗歌中最难翻译的,就目前一些中国前辈翻译的结果看,效果相当的惨绝人寰,所以本博按奈不住,姑且自娱自乐的也随便翻译一番,况且再差也不过是差中加差罢了。值得注意的是,今年的奥斯卡获奖影片《老无所依》正是取名于此旷世奇诗。)

一
那里并非长者的国度。
年轻人在互相拥抱,

他们赞扬、歌颂着在整个的夏天。
被俘获在那世俗感官的乐章,
而忽略的不过是成熟智力的纪念碑。

年老者的确一无是处,
正如同褴褛的外套被支在棍棒之上,
唯有灵魂鼓掌而唱,
是为他丧衣的每一片碎布而大声的歌唱,
没有一所教唱的学院不钻研他自己华丽的纪念之碑;
所以我驶越大海来到了圣城拜占庭。

哦!看啊,贤者们正伫立在上帝的圣火之中
好似那镶金雕饰的壁画,
从圣火中走出来,蜂鹰在回旋,
去为我的灵魂之音召来导师。
毁灭、逝去了我的心,
它是被欲望所追随,
被束缚在垂死的肉身,
也已失去对它的知晓;
还请将我汇聚在通往不朽的途径。

一旦脱离自然界
我将失落用自然之物塑造的我的身体的形式,
只剩下一个希腊金匠用金子和金釉锤打的制造形态
可去维持君主摆脱昏睡后的觉醒;
亦或置于黄金的树枝上去歌唱
给那些逝去的、现在和将来的
拜占庭的领主们、贵妇们聆听。
