简述介词after的17种意思

after一词虽然可以充当副词、连词、形容词和介词等多个词类，但还是做介词的意思最为丰富多彩。本文就after做介词的17种意思以及几个after短语的用法作一概述。

一、after做介词的多种意思

1.意为“at a later time than”, (时间)在......之后。例如：

After the war many soldiers stayed in the European country. 战后，许多士兵留在了这个欧洲国家。

2.意为“behind”, (位置)在......后面。例如：

A lovely cat came out from behind the door. 一只可爱的猫从门后跑了出来。

3.意为“lower than；next to”(地位或重要性)低于; 次于。例如：

He ranked Johnson after Shakespeare. 他将琼森置于仅次于莎士比亚的地位。

4.意为“try to get”(跟在be, go, run等词后)追捕/逐。例如：

A big black dog is running after a white rabbit. 一只大黑狗正在追

赶一只小白兔。

5.意为“according to”, 依照；根据。例如：

This kind of plane is modeled after the same pattern. 这种飞机是依照同一模型制成的。

6.意为“given; as a result of; because of”, 由于；既然; 竟然。例如：

Never shall I forgive him after what he said. 他竟然这样说，为此我永远也不会原谅他。

7.意为“in spite of”, 尽管；虽然。例如：

After all my hard work she still says it isn’t neat enough. 尽管我下了很大功夫，她还是说不够整洁。

8.意为“in honor/memory of; with the name of”, 以......命名。例如：

The school was named after a national hero. 这所学校以一位民族英雄的名字而命名。

9.意为“be absorbed in; concentrate one's efforts on”，专心于。例如：

He was after his favorite sport of squirrel shooting. 他专心在打松鼠，这是他最喜欢的活动。

10.意为“in contrast to; compared with”，比起。例如：

The big comfortable bedroom all seemed very great luxury after the Lius. 这舒适的卧室比起刘家的来就豪华多了。

11.意为“follow the example of; model oneself on; learn from”，效法。例如：

Buck did not like it, but he bore up well to the work, taking pride in it after the

manner of Dave. 巴克不喜欢这项工作，不过他坚持了下来，效法德夫以辛勤劳动为荣。

12.意为“pour in; come swarming; swarm forward”，蜂拥而来。例如：

If you make a bad shot and started one hog screaming, all the others would be after you. 如果你一枪打空，把一只猪急得怪声尖叫，其他的猪都会蜂拥而来，不会放过你。

13. 意为“inherit; succeed; carry on; carry forward”，继承。例如：

Although Saum was rich and great, he was very unhappy；for he had no son to rule his kingdom after him. 萨阿姆虽然富有而且声威赫赫，但他很不愉快；因为他没有儿子来继承他统治的王国。

14.意为“in the direction of”, 向着......背影。例如：

Do remember me kindly to your parents! Mary called after Tom. 一定代我向你父母问好！玛丽在汤姆背后喊道。

15.意为“when telling time”, (美国英语) 几点过几分。例如：

The movie starts at a quarter after eight. 电影8点过15分开始。

16.意为“at the farther side of; to the farther side of”, 在......那边；去......那边。例如：

My friend’s newsagent stands about 400 meters after the crossroads. 我朋友的报刊亭位于十字路口过去约400米处。

17. 意为“stressing continuity, repetitiveness”, 连续不断。例如：

Like a mother, he takes care of the orphan day after day. 他日复一日，如同母亲般呵护着这个孤儿。

二、几个after短语的用法

1. after you: 从字面上看，就是“在你后面”。不过，其真正的意思是“您先请”。此语通常用于进出门或进餐等场合请人先行的客套语。如果一般男士对女士说“After you”，那就是“您先请；女士优先”的意思。例如：

Here comes the bus; After you! 车来了；您先请!

2. after you with...: 在英国英语中，该语一般表示请求别人用完某物之后让你用一下，后面一般接名词和代词等。例如：

After you with the morning paper. 你看完晨报之后，让我看看。

After you with the computer, please.= I’d like to use the computer when you have finished using it. 你用完电脑之后，请让我用用。

3. after all：该语是一个习语，有“不管怎样；归根到底”等意思，用作状语。例如：

After all, what does it matter? 归根到底，那有什么关系呢？

She is a child after all; don’t be hard on her. 不管怎样，她还是小

孩；不要对她太严厉。

4. be after doing sth.：爱尔兰英语, 有两层意思：一是“正要做某事，打算就要做某事”，二是“刚做了某事”。例如：

I am wondering what I am after doing next. 我在想下一步我该干什么。

We are after doing our homework and are ready for a snack. 我们刚做完作业准备吃点心。

5. one after another, =one by one, 意思是“一个接着一个地/的”，作

状语。例如：

It was the time of break and students came out of classroom one after another. 现在是休息时间，学生们一个接一个走出教室。

In spite of the terrible weather, the higher camps were established one

after another. 尽管坏天气的不利影响，更高的营地还是一个接一个陆陆续续地建立了。

6. after a fashion:意思是“勉强；马马虎虎”。例如：

She plays badminton after a fashion. 她打羽毛球的水平马马虎虎。

I dare say he was in love with you after a fashion. 我敢说，他只是随

随便便地爱你。
