Jim’s trademark fastball whistled past Ken Griffey Jr.’s bat, just an inch from being crushed. “That was so close!” He heaved a sigh of relief when the umpire signaled another strikeout.

The last pitch saw Griffey lost his focus and hit a high fly ball to shallow right field that got him out. End of the seventh inning --- another perfect one, however, Jim’s mind had already scurried to his girlfriend Ev with the flying ball.

One hundred miles away, Ev was driving away from the city to visit her parents. “Damn baseball is all he needs.” She cursed profanity, trying her best not to listen to the live radio telecast of Jim’s game. It was the first time she had missed Jim’s games, unaware of its magnitude --- a potential perfect game.

Jim sat alone --- all his teammates stayed away to let him stay in the zone. “What a game!” he said to himself. “Just two more innings, 6 outs, like I have done a million times. Here I am, in the game of my lifetime, pursuing the baseball pinnacle, and she is not watching!”

Jim’s teammates played their hearts out in the last two innings. It was no longer a matter of win or lose. They were eager to participate in baseball history --- a perfect game. After the center fielder dived to catch the ball that was almost hit out of the diamond, the Mariners were down to their last hitter.

Jim’s eyes swept the stand quickly, hoping that Ev might miraculously show up to witness his greatest moment. Ironically, Ev always yearned for perfection. She used to tease him that if Jim pitched a perfect game, they would get married right away --- a scenario they never had expected to occur.

The audience rose to their feet, waving and roaring. At the same time, Ev was listening to Jazz music, after having determined that baseball was the last thing in her mind.

Feeling extremely exhausted, Jim murmured Ev’s name before each pitch, as if Ev were just standing next to him, empowering him to gather his ultimate strength.

Jim struck the last hitter out! A perfect game! Teammates jumping, audience thundering, cameras clicking --- all those meant nothing to him. He ran as quickly as possible to call Ev.

As mind-blowing as a perfect game might sound, baseball was a second thought for Jim at the moment.

Without her, nothing was perfect.
