Jim’s right arm felt like a sore burning stick, after pitching six perfect innings before being on the brink giving up his first hit: one strike, three balls. It was obviously not an auspicious situation, especially facing the best hitter in MLB league --- Ken Griffey Jr. of Seattle Mariners, who led MLB batters in RBIs and Home Runs.
Jim had been in this deep hole millions of times. A 35-year old eight-time All-Star pitcher of Milwaukee Brewers, he had a knack in striking out power hitters. However, he was nowhere near the top of his game at this shitty moment. Feeling low and dreary after a fierce quarrel with his girlfriend Ev the night before, he started to wonder that probably her accusation had a point --- he spent too much time on baseball, thus gave her very little attention. She threatened to leave him, and this time it seemed that she meant it, which sent Jim into deep panic.
All of sudden, baseball terms were endowed with new signification of life. He had cursed them one by one during his unusual six perfect innings. Though bemazed and lazy, his trademark fastballs didn’t fade a bit, even more powerful than ever, as if he was venting wrath upon the ball.
Single: A base hit to get a runner on first base = She agrees to have dinner with me on a date.
Double: A base hit to get a runner on second base = She accepts my offer to walk her home.
Triple: A base hit to get a runner on third base = She gets my hint and invites me to her bedroom.
Home Run: Hitting the ball out of the diamond and a run scored! = I score and get laid at the end of the date!
“ I always scored home runs on her, with my sturdy physique and warm charisma.” Jim reflected: “What type of ball will she throw to me this time?”
Right arm heaved, he mustered the remaining strength and glanced over to the plate from the mound: Ken Griffey Jr stared at him like a Lion eyeing for its next prey! (To be continued).
