Death-Beating the Odds
The Lecture of 9,Mar at ANTH 325
At that day's class,Dr. Schafer didn't give a lecture, he just let
us watch a video--Death-Beating the Odds. It is a documentary
mainly showing the three people's stories about how they treat
their severe illness. I love it very much and also I understood
most of them. Perhaps just because I am so familiar with the
situation in Chinese, in China, at my home.
In the
documentary, there are 3 people--a male and 2 females.
The
male, named Hugh, was 76 when he first got the new he got lung
cancer. Immediately he was announced he had only 3-6 months to go.
Of course Hugh was not ready for it. No operation, just taking
medicine. But Hugh was a optimistic man, 2 years later, the odd
just disappeared. That means he was good, but didn't mean he was
safe again. Then later he became weak, the cancer came back.
Hugh had a niece who was
nearly 30, named Sara, whose mother just died of cancer and she had
her double lungs transplanted when she was 18 years old. After that
she was warned she would live until 24, but now she was 30. She got
ready for her death positively. She got a job, and lived a life
like a ordinary person.
Susan,
another woman, a mother of 2 teenagers, suffered from her disease,
but continued to live for 18 years.
They all have positive
attitudes to life which make them live longer that they
expect.
The video is
moving and I feel both moved and sad. The same situation just
happened at my home and we are struggling with life.
