2012 Course Outline

Lecturer: Catherine Dale
Lecture 1(1,Mar)
A brief
introduction to the course and way to study and
exam.
Lecture 2 (2,Mar)Origin of feminist Theory
reading: thinking for ourselves
Feminist theory:"initially guided by the political aims of the women's movement"
Why would the women's liberation movenment need an intellectual wing?
No existing theories fitted problems and questions around the opperession of half the world's population
In politics you need to know who you are and what you are for
-political position:equality, equal pay...
-political direction and outlook
3 points on Feminist Theory
1.Feminist Theory has (at least)a dual task
a.to analyse the conditons(body, economy)that shape women's lives
b. to explore cultural understandings of what it means to be a woman
Today:the study of gender-the conditions that shape our gendered lives and the understandings of what it means to be a gender (women's studies became gender studies)
"women have more often been the object of knowledge than the producers of it...Feminist Theory is about thinking for ourselves women generating knowledge about women and gender for women" (Jackson and Jones)
2.Feminist Theory challenges mainstream social and political thought
-initiation of feminist theory-'no existing theories fitted'
-existing mainstream social and political theories were"
-androcentric
-marginalised and trivialised women their
perspective and their lives
-misogynistic
e.g. gender pay gap/slutwalk case/misogyny
role,aim,and purpose of feminist theory
-analyse and point out the androcentric(male-bias)in mainstream and canonical political and social thought
-question the received truths from these mainstream theories
-offer alternative images of women
create alternative concepts and ideas that are self-critical rather than complacent
3.Feminist Theory challenges the theory/experience dichotomy
feminist theory strengths:
-recognises that 'women'is not as homogeneous group
-is interdisciplinary
-is not static:new, change
a. harder to pin down many political positions
b.diversity and change are interlinked
c.different directions=different perspectives
