两位演讲人简介:
Leah Garcés is the Director of Programmes for the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) with a Zoology degree from the university of Florida. Garcés oversees the global programmes for WSPA including programmes related to whales, farm animals and the general recognition of animal welfare internationally. Garcés is the author of various publications including: "The detrimental impacts of industrial animal agriculture: a case for humane and sustainable agriculture", which was launched at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002, "The welfare of broiler chickens in the European Union", "Practical alternatives to the factory farming of broiler chickens" and "Industrial animal agriculture - the next global health crisis?" which was launched and presented at the November 2004 World Health Organization (WHO) annual meeting of the Global Forum for Health Research in Mexico City, Mexico.
Amy Firth has a BSc in Animal Welfare Science. Firth joined WSPA after graduating in 2001 and currently manages WSPA's farm animal welfare programme. WSPA has UN and Council of Europe consultative status and works at the head of the world's largest federation of over 650 local animal welfare organisations in 138 countries worldwide to protect animals from exploitation and suffering. WSPA believes that change will come through a mixture of education, direct action and legislation. WSPA is opposed to intensive industrial animal farming and believes that by working with local groups in 12 countries around the world to highlight the problems inherent to industrial animal agriculture and promote humane and sustainable alternatives. Firth's career with WSPA has taken her to the furthest reaches of the planet from Colombia where she took part in the country's 1st ever animal welfare conference, a world health summit in Mexico, and more recently a conference about meat quality and safety in Beijing attended by a number of world renown animal welfare experts such as Professor Donald Broom of Cambridge University and Dr David Fraser of the University of British Colombia.
演讲内容:
* The first is an introduction to animal welfare and sentience. This will take a closer look at the science behind animal welfare. We will define animal welfare and animal sentience. Why animal welfare is important - not just for the animal but also for human health and food quality and safety.
* The second is an overview of the most significant welfare problems affecting farm animals. This session will also examine farm animal welfare legislation and advances around the world. Again this will feature the work of some of the world's most renown animal welfare scientist.
