Former Botswana Ambassador in
China Mr. George commended: Monastery is a good place for cultural
exchanges
On 17 Feb 2018 more than 150
people from various communities joined in the Chinese New Year
celebration through a variety of cultural activities at Longquan
Bohua Monastery at Notwane, promoting cultural exchanges and
establishing understandings between China and Botswana. Masters of
the Longquan Bohua Monastery welcomed over eighty Botswana
citizens, children from the Chinese Charity Care Centre (CCCC), as
well as friends and people from various circles from China and
Botswana. Former Botswana Ambassador in China H.E. Mr. Sasara
Chasala George attended the event and delivered a
speech.
Program included an exhibition
of Botswana postage stamps and photographs of the Monastery;
delicious Chinese traditional vegetarian dishes; pizzas specially
made for local taste; pasta; spectacular Chinese martial arts show;
Marimba performances; as well as an ensemble of the national anthem
of Botswana. This event represented the blending and the charm of
the traditional culture of China and Botswana.
The exhibition of postage
stamps and photographic works were provided by the Monastery and
the overseas Chinese living in Botswana. The works involved the
construction and development of the monastery; humanities,
geography and the history of Botswana, in presentation to the
guests the original and natural sceneries of this ancient land of
Botswana, which helps people to know more about the
country.
Mr. George spoke about how
pleased he was to visit Longquan Bohua Monastery and was honored to
join everyone in celebration of the Chinese New Year. He expressed
his dream in looking forward to come to the Monastery in the past
four years and that he was very impressed to be able to visit this
place of giving, sharing and full of happiness on this special day.
He indicated that Botswana advocates religious freedom and hopes to
see the coexistence of all the regions in the country, “when people
from both countries cooperate together, we will become friends.” He
continued to say, when he was the Botswana Ambassador in China, he
asked China to conduct a wider range of cultural exchanges in
Botswana. Therefore, it is a great pleasure to see that Longquan
Bohua Monastery is opening to public in Botswana and has already
held a number of successful different Buddhism cultural exchanging
events, which have not only enriched the Botswana culture and
religion, but have also promoted the mutual exchange and
understandings between the two countries. He encourages all the
citizens of Botswana to join and participate in the activities of
the Monastery, in achieving the "better us".
Masters of the Monastery
introduced Longquan Bohua Monastery to the guests. Longquan Bohua
Monastery is the African temple in Botswana of Beijing Longquan
Temple which has for over a thousand years’ history. Monastery has
now successfully organized a series of cultural events and
philanthropic activities since 2016, and we aim in continuing to do
charity and teach people how to help themselves in improving their
life.
Buddhism is becoming popular in
western countries for a number of reasons. One of the good reasons
is that Buddhism has answers to many problems in our modern
materialistic societies. It also includes, for those who are
interested, a deep understanding of human’s mind and natural
therapies which prominent psychologists around the world have now
discovered to be both advanced and
effective.
Moreover, Longquan Bohua
Monastery is actively providing services to local people, helping
out children from the SOS children’s village and the Chinese
Charity Care Centre, organizing events for students from Northside
school and from other secondary schools to learn and experience
Buddhism. We have also started a class for the Botswana to learn
Buddhism, and there are also Botswana who took the refuge to become
Buddhists. We hope more international friends can get to know more
about Buddhism and experience the wisdom of Dharma in the
future.
Monastery is not just a place
for monks to cultivate themselves according to religious doctrines,
but there are also eight social service functions:
It is a place for faith and
morality education; a museum of Buddhist culture and art (currently
under construction), a mental hospital; a place that offers school
education; a public-interest and charity organization; a social
center of multicultural exchanges; a center to inherit and carry
forward traditional Chinese culture; and lastly, an exchange center
of friendship between Botswana and China.
