The
cultural exchanges between China and Russia (Soviet Union) have a
long history. A great deal of Soviet works were translated in China
far back in the past, and a large number of Chinese works published
in Soviet Union. In October 1992, China joined Berne Convention and
Universal Copyright Convention respectively, followed by Russia
that joined Berne Convention in 1995. In April 1996, the two
governments signed the Agreement for Intellectual Property
Cooperation. Based on the principles and standards of Berne
Convention, both parties agrred to protect copy rights mutually,
thus started the bilateral trade in copyright. China-Russia
cooperation in book publishing and copyright has been a crucial
part of bilateral cultural exchanges, with Russia being a major
partner of China. In recent years, China and Russia have enjoyed
close ties and frequent personnel exchanges, bilateral trade and
exchanges in copyright yielding fruitful results.
In
1942, when How the Steel Was Tempered by Ostrovsky (translated by
Mr. Mei Yi from the English edition, published by New Knowledge
Bookstore) was published in China for the first time, the book and
the motto of its hero, Pavel Korchagin, was a big hit and quickly
spread throughout the country. Among various translated versions,
the Chinese one has obtained the largest sales volume. With the
largest printing number and sales, How the Steel was Tempered is de
facto a classic among all the foreign literary works published in
China.
