How can she improve her personal best by A WHOLE five seconds..."

I don't know how much Mr. Leonard is considered as a true expert. He seems to be having a hard time believing someone could beat her personal best by a whopping five seconds and yet in 1997 South Wales Championships, an Australian Olympic swimmer, Ian Thorpe, beat his own personal best by a whopping 8 seconds in the 400m when he was 14.

The fact is when the top sports athletes performing in a big game, these type of achievement can happen and it happens all the time. That is what the whole Olympic games are about; athletes go there hoping to break new records. Every Olympics, we always have someone achieve something that no one has ever done before. Everyone can have their suspicions, but when even the IOC medical commissioner came out and vouched for Ye,...

THERE    IS   NO   QUESTION  THAT   PHELPS   WAS  ON   DRUGS.

19   OLYMPIC   MEDALS   IS   PHYSICAL   IMPOSSIBILITY.

This young girl is very petite and has trained very hard her whole life. Until PROVEN otherwise let her enjoy her success!

GoodJournali

This is not a "controversy", this is just a smear compaign instigated by some people and propagated by some biased media. The IOC official has spoken. She is clean and end of the story. Unless there are facts otherwise, those people should just shut up.

People ask why people don't like USA. I think the question is why does USA not like other countries? If China came in second place, they'd be happy for USA. Yet, USA is angry to come in second. Sore losers.

I know it's easy to be suspicious of all of our athletes these days, but...

In light of the fact that Miss Ye has passed all of her drug and doping screens, either produce evidence that she has actually cheated somehow, or STFU.

People seem to forget about the first and most natural performace-enhancing drug, adrenaline.
It comes with the thrill of doing something extraordiary.

roc999

Bias, jealous, insecure, that is all I see from this article.

Unless post-game testing shows the presence of drugs, there really is no reason to believe that this is anything other than a fairly impressive new record. The lady has size 13 feet and large hand (not unlike Phelps) and this gives her a natural advantage. Why would a 16 year old who's spent 10 of those 16 years training, has genetic gifts for this... WANT to take the risk of cheating?

Until there is evidence of doping, given the new measures in place, I'm going to take this event at face value and congratulate her for this achievement.

So, let me get this right, Phelps wins 19 medals, smashes world records one after another and then China starts to emerge as a words sports superpower in swimming and in a lot of usually american sports and they start pulling allegations of doping.....
sounds like sore losers to me (should we talk about Florence Griffith and Lance Armstrong?....losers!!)

pragmatist81

I am amazed how much has non-controversy has been made of this story. Let's look at the full facts instead of only a portion that the press has found convenient.

1. Ye Shiwen's winning time of 4:28 is more than 23 seconds slower than Ryan Lochte's winning time of 4:05. This 16-year-old girl is not faster than Lochte - she is more than 9% slower. This is in line with most swimming and track & field events where men's world records have been 9 to 11% better than women's.

2. Ye Shiwen was "5 seconds faster than she ever swam" only if you consider her last swim to be her 4:33 in the 2010 World Championships. She was aged 14 (!!) back then, barely a young teenager. Why should we be surprised that at 16 years, she would be swimming much faster than she did as a 14-year-old? Ye also...

duckconquer

She has passed the drug test, hasn't she? So, why couldn't you just celebrate to her like other people? She is only 16, she worked hard and reserved this gold medal, don't you think this suspicion is unfair to her? Why you don't suspect Phelps?

These guys are just 'disturbingly' jealous........ its just a matter of time, before they start driving taxi cabs in China.

bittersweet2

God saw the controversy and inspired her parents to name her Ye Shiwen.
For non Chinese speakers needing help with the pronunciation, and for those still questioning her win, its YEH SHE WON.
