“Don'ts” in China

——Don't assume that the British Embassy can "get you out" if you are arrested,  detained or refused permission to leave China for any reason.  But there are ways we can help so do insist on your right to contact the Embassy or Consulate-General as soon as possible.

——Don't overstay your welcome!  You are automatically fined each day you remain in China beyond the expiry date of your visa.  If you cannot pay, you could be arrested and put into Immigration detention and deported - at your own expense.

——Don't get involved in any way with drugs.  Penalties are severe and can attract the DEATH penalty.  A British national was convicted, sentenced to death and executed by the Chinese authorities in December 2009 for a drug-related offence.  Don't carry anything through customs for someone else unless you know exactly what it contains.

——Don't gamble or engage with prostitutes.  Both activities are illegal and if caught you are liable to be placed into administrative detention and potential deportation.

——Don't use a guide who approaches you on the street, even if they appear to have genuine credentials.  They may be tricksters.  Scams do, unfortunately, abound in some tourist areas of Beijing and Shanghai.  Tourists are befriended by a 'student' wishing to practice their English.  They are then taken to a traditional tea house and handed a bill at the end of their 'tea-tasting experience' running to hundreds of pounds.

——Don't enter into a contract in China without having it thoroughly examined - both in the UK and in China.  Contracts entered into in the UK are not enforced by Chinese courts.  British nationals doing business in China should be aware that if they become involved in a business dispute and/or civil dispute, and the case eventually goes to court, the Chinese government may prohibit them from leaving China until the matter is resolved.

——Don't, under any circumstances, ever sign any document that you do not fully and clearly understand.
